I know men and women can be 'friends'.. but..

Would you bother/put in effort to be a girl's 'friend' if you weren't somehow sexually attracted and maybe hoping to develop something more?

Most men wouldn't. Girls are much more apt to have guy friends who are truly just friends in their eyes.

That said, of course it is _possible_ for a hetero guy and gal to be truly just pals, but be wary. Even something that starts out innocent and pure can become more and it may not have been anyone's intention. It makes sense since close friendships breed affection, and affection felt for someone of the opposite sex often translates into the body wanting to follow.

If your guy/gal is pal-ing around with a gal/guy, it's not wise to forbid it (given that there isn't just cause), but make sure you keep open communication about their friendship. Know their patterns (how often they get together, what they do, are you invited or do they want solitary time, etc.) and note any changes in that pattern especially (more frequent, suddenly more secretive or defensive, suddenly acting differently around her/him or YOU, esp. after seeing him/her, etc.)

I thinks a friendship / relationship must be established on other common interests, but the females need to establish ground rules for ANY friendship, more for their own benfit than the new friend. Women need friends and companions; they need someone to talk with, not to. They have to decide if the relationship will be based on a variety of common interests or just sex.
Of course, in my opinion, if a relationship is based only on sex, its no different than a cat in heat, and not a friendship.
From this female perspective, it's not all about sex.
