You must find what suits you. Others can study for long hours and others study for a short duration then they take a break. You must also study at a time that is comfortable for you. It is best to study a lecture immediately after they give it. For recitations it is good to study the night before. For exams it is best to study the subject at least once a week at least 2 weeks before the exam. They say that when you see and hear and do it you can memorize 70 percent of the topic that is lectured. So when your teacher lectures, look (see) and listen (hear) intently. Write down (do) notes so that the lesson sticks to your mind. Do the same when you read, read (see) it aloud (hear) to yourself and write (do) down notes of what you're reading. This way you'll be able to remember clearly what you've read. Make sure you had good sleep. Studying when you're sleepy won't help. Take a short 15-30 minute nap to help you stay awake before studying if you're sleepy. Coffee has been known to improve memory retention but it won't keep you awake always. I hope you're asking advice because you're cramming for an exam. Happy studying!

When I was in school I would go somewhere where it was quiet and go over the information a few times and it would sink in. You can actually study too hard and for too long and get stressed and forget everything you've studied. Just try to go somewhere quiet and just look everything over and then later on go back and do it again. Make sure that you get a good night's sleep and a good breakfast the day of the tests.

Take notes in class, and then rewrite them over at home when studying. If you need more help, try typing your notes onto your computer also. The more times you review and write notes, the more it'll go into your longterm memory.
Also, highlighting textbooks and writing notes in the margins help me.

To study a night before your exam is not a good idea. Our brain stores some info but not all of it. Reading your lessons everyday and trying to understand it makes it easier for you to review. Goodluck!
