As an airline supervisor (gate) let me tell you one thing- if you're polite you can get almost anything you want. All airlines oversell flights (coach only) and sometimes are in need to move passengers from the aft to first class. If this is the case then I will sit someone up there who was cool from the get go.

All of the above is true. However, remember that you are not going to be upgraded if you don't look the part (no airline is going to have their business or first class pasengers sitting next to a tramp). Also, I would advise against asking - most check-in staff like to feel that they have made the decision themselves - not because some pushy individual has asked for an upgrade.
Finally, apply for the frequent flyer card of any airline you are likely to travel on. It costs you nothing and automatically puts you at the head of the queue for upgrades - airlines like to reward loyal clients.

Only if the airline has made an obvious error that they can not hide .Like say if you booked 2 tickets and have documentation and they only booked one for you.Or if your tour company miss-interpreted your specifications relating to accomodation, like access for dissabled been requested and not booked correctly.Basicaly if there is an error somewhere that is not yours and you can prove it.A delay in the flight does not count as one of their responsibilities. You will get a free sarnie and a cuppa for that.Hope this helps ,and have a nice day,P.

yes - it has happened to me three times. It seems that they overbook economy quite often counting on the usual no-shows to even things out. But sometimes everyone turns up! If there are spaces in business class they can choose to upgrade you to there rather than bounce you from the flight (which could cost them more). Preference seems to go to people travelling on their own, and who are well dressed.

Yes , but you have to be lucky , and on the right flight at the right time .
Those who travel as a single person have most chance as they may be asked to give up a seat to allow a couple . family to sit together.
It has only ever happened to me the once , so don't rely on it working for you , but good luck

Harder than it used to be but still possible. It does not hurt to ask and if you shmooz the right flight attendant it some times works.

while you're a guy or woman who flies a minimum of 25,000 miles with the airline, they could improve you if there are any seats available. people who fly with the airline the main have a tendency to get the advancements first. in case you purely fly with the airline as quickly as in awhile, I doubt they'll improve you for loose. you could continuously attempt in case you get bumped off a flight because of the fact the airline oversold.
