For a start, dont ever tell them to "pause while I take the photo". You need to have your finger on the shutter read to snap that shot. Just be yourself and let them be themselves. Ask them (not tell them) to get into a certain position and while they are doing this, start snapping. It's usually these images of them before they are ready that are the best. Talk to them and allow them to talk back. Get them to do silly things. Tell jokes. Instead of asking them to smile, ask them to do something ridiculous which will inevitably lead to laughs.

For wedding formals, by verbal direction, or sometimes by copy me. If I need to touch them, I always ask "May I?", at least for the first few times. Some poses require more fine-tuning than others, those are the touch ones.
For more casual posing, many times I just tell them something to do, and then shoot the moments as they occur. For instance, "Lean in together and laugh, then kiss" Or "Walk along this stone wall holding hands." Different people respond to different methods. Some folks just automatically understand what you mean, others need more direction.

i'm not a photographer, but i love to take pictures :) I believe photography to be a very expressive and creative genre of art. You have to find a model easy to work with and and that is great at what she does. I think that the bast way to take pictures and get the model to do what you want is very difficult, but there shouldn't be any posing, it makes the picture look fake. i think that for example, if you wanted a very happy cute picture of a girl you would tell her to have fun and enjoy herself you would get a natural facial expression. you she get her her to feel comfortable in front of the camera. I would maybe also tell her to begin skipping towards me and on 3 you would take the shot. that would be a great photo. Just simply tell the models to act naturally in front of the camera. I'm sure by doing that you can get a top quality picture and you will be happy with the result image.

you need to have some idea before you start of what you want. cut photos out of mags look threw books to show the model. This will save time and you will both get the best from the shoot
Good luck
