Shouldn't you belive in God, just in case there is one? And why are there still monkeys if we evolved from monkeys? How can you have any morals without God? Do you know you worship Satan by denying God?............*cheers*

You left out Pascal's Wager and the 'free will' debate, among other things.

Trust me, dude, they bug me far more than they bug you. At least you can just make fun of them... I actually have to set them straight. It's tough being the goalie.

EDIT:
Dang newbs are taking you seriously! Cracks me up!

Are you serious? that was so stereotypial I so expect it to be a joke. (edit- oh good, it is! hey, some christians have a sense of humor too, so your avatar didnt tell me anything.) My sense of humor is three hundred years out of date though so i can't tell. but here's my tired response to each point

You shouldn't believe anything just in case of anything. You should believe what you do because you have thought about it, weighed the evidence, and found it either rang of truth, or at least was not impossible. it helps if it fullfills your life somehow.

We didn't evolve from monkeys. We evolved from somewhat monkeylike ancestors. Many different species evolved from the same species- different habitats cause different evolutionary paths.

God doesnt dictate your morality- your society does. (No? how would a crusade go over in this day and age? Wouldn't people look at you funny at the very least for practicing animal sacrifice as put forth in the bible as the appropriate thing to do?)

And if you do not actively worship anyone, then you're not worshipping anyone, period. Satan is not recieving this nonexistant worship anymore than is, say, Kali.

And lastly, atheists are on R+S probably for the same reason I am. (I'm a recon.) Beliefs are beliefs, even if they don't conform to what some people think is the only religion at all. Spirituality is not a monopolised property owned only by one group.

your question, well the first part, is in line with the false assumption of Pascals Wager. He too believed that we should believe, just in case the believers are right. His infamous pragmatic argument of pensees;

"If you erroneously believe in God, you lose nothing, whereas if you correctly believe in God, you gain everything. But if you correctly disbelieve, you gain nothing, whereas if you erroneously disbelieve in God, you lose everything."

simply put; if you believe and God is real, you are saved, but
if you disbelieve in God and he is real, you are damned, but
if you believe in God and he is not real, you lose nothing
but if you dibelieve in God and he is not real, you lose nothing, thus it is better to believe for your soul is saved no matter what the outcome.

this statement is false, for it is based on the principle that there is only one God, that the Christian or Catholic church ( which was the main church of the time) was and is the only true faith. Today we have thousands of different faiths world wide, thus this fact negates the validity of the wager.
How do Christians know that their God is the right one, what if Allah,of Mahomet's teachings, is the real God, that the church did not move forward to the next Prophet as it should have done. Would this not mean certain doom for the followers of the false Christ. the same can be said vice versa, will all followers of Mahomet be doomed for not following Christ's final word. the debate is endless.

Evolution: the human race evolved from two members of the primate family, one was not strong enough to outdo the other and we, being the fittest, prevailed. The apes in the zoo are only genetical cousins. Our ability to have cognative thought and have a way of communication throughout the race, is what makes us the dominant species, this I would have thought, would be quite easy for anyone to work out for themselves, which I am sure you have. Christians seem to use this "monkey" query to give credence to creationism, which is flawed in every way.

Morals are the laws of Conscience, you are your conscience, thus those laws are passed on to the issue of you and your partner. The laws of Moses are just a re-affirmation of the laws of conscience based on the good over-powering the evil within the conscience of all mankind.

To be a worshiper of Satan would be problematic due to our disbelief in omnipotent beings.

*cheers*

Don't be such a Beavis.
"Just in case?" That is like saying go ahead and get that leg cut off just in case it gets infected one day.

"Why are there still monkeys?" Don't tell me...you were too scared to even learn one thing about evolution which says we have a common ancestor...not that we came from monkeys.

"morals without God." Are you saying the only reason you are moral is because God would hurt you if you weren't? That is how you and I differ...I am moral because it is inside me to be so.

"Worship Satan by denying God?" So in order to worship God all I have to do is deny Satan? No more action is needed? Interesting.

"Shouldn't you belive in God, just in case there is one? "

Heh, you are the one gambling. There are MANY god's, chances are you picked the wrong one.

"And why are there still monkeys if we evolved from monkeys?"
Why are there still wolves since dogs came from wolves?

"How can you have any morals without God?"
You know damn well you need no god to have morals. I'm sure you don't go around stoning gays or disobedient children like it says to do in the OT; why? because you have the ability to see what is moral and not IN SPITE of what the OT says.

"Do you know you worship Satan by denying God?"
We worship neither; for neither exist.

The real question is why would they want to be?

Simple, take any sport or game, you study your opponents game, you build up tactics to counteract their moves, the knowledge is power thing.

Also, this is a debate, you ask the questions, we give our answers, in some cases this reaffirms what we already know, in other cases it causes us to research or to look at if our opinions are correct.

Third, you are missing to the point, R & S is just that, a 'room' for all aspects of religion and spirituality, there is nothing barring people who are non-christian.

I have a spirituality, I do not believe in any gods, how do you see that.

As for the other stuff you said, it actually detracts from rather than explains what is a good question.

Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Humans are more closely related to modern apes than to monkeys, but we didn't evolve from apes, either. Humans share a common ancestor with modern African apes, like gorillas and chimpanzees. Scientists believe this common ancestor existed
5 to 8 million years ago. Shortly thereafter, the species diverged into two separate lineages. One of these lineages ultimately evolved into gorillas and chimps, and the other evolved into early human ancestors called hominids.
WHY CANT YOU PEOPLE HAVE ENOUGH FAITH TO BELIEVE GOD CAN DO ANYTHING INCLUDING EVOLUTION?
morals with no god? easy. we are group animals and just like any other pack we don't kill our own, we preserve our children's lives and help each other.
Satan is not real.

As a Christian, I'll answer your questions:

1) No one should "believe" in God just in case he exists. In fact, by definition that is not belief.

2) You are one of few uneducated hold-outs that suggests that evolution and religion are mutually exclusive.

3) People can find a moral compass through religion and religion is certainly a guide there, but religion does not create those morals, it just provides a framework. I find most atheists I know to have the strongest morals, coincidentally. It's just that not everyone needs an external structure to morality.

4) Not believing in God is certainly not equivalent to worshipping Satan. Do your homework; jerky stuff like that is what gives religion a bad reputation.

5) As far as your bold headline question, atheists are "on R&S" because they are just as entitled to participate in conversations about R&S as you are.

You believe in God just in case there is one????? Ya know...I think He can see thru that! And yes you can have morals w/out believing in God. It's just a matter of believing that you should treat others the way you would like to be treated. As for evolving....well, humans are getting taller - but there are still short people.

I believe

that you already know the answers to your questions. You are not new to this forum and, if you have been paying attention you will be fully-aware that these rather inane questions have been asked many, many times befiore, usually by newcomers. You are NOT a newcomer.
Thus, I suggest that you are either extra-dim or are just throwing these old 'chestnuts' into the fire for some other misguided reason.
Therefore, no answers from this atheist. I won't give you that satisfaction.

1. Ok. Let's say you should believe in god just in case there is one? So which one do you want to pick. There are 1,000's to choose from.

2. Ok. So if god created Man from dirt and Women from a Spare Rib - then why is there still dirt and spare ribs.

3. How can you have morals if you only act good because someone is watching you? That's not moral - that's CYA.

4. The last one isn't even worth responding to.
