Most people misunderstand the term carnivore. Most carnivores that people can name can not live on an all meat diet.
[DISCLAIMER] if you are eating now, stop reading.

Many eat the entire animal whole. Carnivores in the wild eat meat but they also eat the stomach contents, organs which are processing vegetable matter, some leather, fur, feathers, even unshit feces. Feeding a dog only meat would rob it of nutrients and important health considerations.

For example, what a wild dog gets from fur and feathers is the benefit we get from "fiber". It helps scrub out the system. Thats why dogs and cats will chew grass when they have upset stomachs.

So dont turn a dog into a carnivore unless you are prepared to feed it the entire animal.

Is A Dog A Carnivore

this is a question that has been driving me nuts lately. ill start off with i am 100% positive that your dog isnt a herbivore.

in reality, a dog is a carnivore. a dog can survive off of nothing other than meat. they can survive quite well actually. i already know you are going to get a lot of answers from people saying.... "corn is the main ingredient in dog food, they need that stuff".. wrong! corn is horrible for any dog and is a cheap filler that crap companies use to fill your dogs stomach up.

for awhile i feed a raw diet to my dog. 80% raw meat, 10% bones and 10% organs. thousands of people feed their pets this diet and they do very well. others feed the same diet, but add a little vegetable to the mix. this is good because it adds some vitamins to the diet.

now i saw that dogs are carnivores because they cant digest the vegitables well without a little help. in order for them to get ANYTHING out of them they need to be ground up.

Edit:

Ok, i have to say this.. you people are dumb. just because your dog eats grass doesnt make him an omnivore. he eats grass because he doesnt feel well, not because he is getting nutrition out of it.

maybe your dog eats your strawberries because the just taste good. you cant classify an animal as a carnivore or herbivore based on what tastes good to it. i know people who dont like meat.. so does that mean that their genetic makeup changed and turned them into herbivores? no!

if you feed a cow a bit of chicken it doesnt make him a carnivore does it? no.

lets think before we spout off at the mouth now.

one more thing to be said about these "educated" people who say that they must be omnivores. the majority of studies on this kind of thing have been conducted by dog food companies who stuff their junk kibble full of crappy fillers.
do you really trust toothpaste and dish soap companies to know whats best for your dog to eat?

Dogs are omnivores they can eat fruit, veg, meat.
Wolves to are omnivores as sometimes when they haven't managed a kill they will forage for fruit, berries other edible vegetation.
Dogs also can live off a completely meat free diet without any ill affects whereas a Cat which is a carnivore would become very ill if fed a meat free diet.

Dogs are omnivores while they basically live on meat they also eat plants. What is a tale-tell sign of a puppy with an upset tummy? They go to the backyard and eat grass!

Dogs (even wild ones) are omnivores. It drives me insane when people put up posts about there "fantastic raw, all meat diet", and they say how much they researched it. Obviously they did not, because the first thing you learn in any canine nutrition class is that they are omnivorous.

Carnivore. They have the teeth and simple digestive tract for it. I'd bet any carbs or vegetation they get in the wild is from what's in their prey's stomachs.

Man has forced dogs to be opportunistic carnivores; they'll eat what we give them, and steal meat when they can. All these foods with 'whole grains and rich vegetables' in them? Feed 'em to a rabbit. Dogs want protein. They are built to eat meat, not carrots.

depends...does he eat grass and meat? if its food is only meat flavored, i think s/he'd be an herbivore. if s/he takes interest in birds or mice, try carnivore. Honesty, i think they're omnivores, because sometimes, when they have an upset tummy, they'll eat grass, but my dog loves to chase birds.
depends on the dog though.

Carnivore. But it is suggested that if your are going to start giving it meats, you shouls start with cooked meats first and a little at a time. Then slowly progress to the raw materials.
Also if you want to make your own dog food they love cooked potatoes, carrots, corn, boiled chicken squash.
I did alot of research after the poison scare with the pet foods.
