You can also take walks in the more stylish neighborhoods/streets of S.F. & check out salons. (e.g. Noe Valley or Union St. as opposed to the Sunset or Richmond district)

There are two local free papers that have ads from edgier boutiques & salons - SF Weekly & the SF Bay Guardian. Sometimes, hair salons offer training nights. Clients can get their hair cut by junior stylists or senior stylists @ lower prices so the stylists can practice or demonstrate new techniques/cuts.
