Yes, they know because they feel so lousy, they know "something is wrong" or understand the state they are in is depression.
There are different types of depression; clinical and situational for example are different. Clinical is usually when someone is incapacitated and cannot do their normal daily routine (lay in bed all day, sit and cry all day). This requires professional help.
Situational has to do with an event throws someone into turmoil; a death, loss of job, divorce, etc., this is temporary and usually a person either handles it by themselves or gets counseling.
In psychology, different disorders are categorized in the DSM, a large book.

If you had it you will know, I have my good and bad days.As for people who do it for sympathy I could think of better ways to get some. This disease is worse than cancer because you really don't know from one day to the next how you are going to feel, or if its just you you are going to hurt or maybe someone else. As how to deal with it Therapy and anti depressants.
My family has helped a lot, So have my stays at the VA mental hospital, Its no game Depression is the real deal, And its the closest thing to hell here on earth.

When I was younger I always felt like this must be how other people feel but, then in the back of my mind I knew I was. I always felt sad I know it wasn't right. Depression as disorder is usually noticed because it's feeling of sadness or helplessness usually for long periods of time. Don't often sleep well or sleep too much, loss in regular activities, lack of energy and suicidal thoughts are some symptoms. Procedures are usually therapy combined with medication. therapy helps with our personal emotions and thoughts and medication deals with the neurotransmitters in the brain that are another cause for depression.

I'm not sure why you're asking this question. If you know someone who has felt comfortable enough to share their pain with depression, and you "wrote them off" as saying it because they "needed sympathy," then you should do research on depression immediately. I am taking a wild guess in assuming you are young, and this is the first time you've been "exposed" to depression. It is real. It starts early in life, or later. NO ONE is excluded. If you're looking for answers so you can help yourself, or more likely, SOMEONE ELSE, the most sincere thing you can do is stop thinking people who suffer from depression are looking for sympathy. Your comment is a perfect example to explain the painful delay in our health system to recognize depression as a mental illness. Don't waste any more time online on this topic...find a counselor - for you- and/or the person affected...TRUE DEPRESSION never goes away...so TRUE SUPPORT and finding peace with it being in your life is the first step. CONSTANT research, medication-doctor-alternative assistance is my personal suggestion. My family thinks like you...but they're old-school. Hopefully, with enough research, and open-mindedness, you can help yourself/affected one...one day at a time. CHANGE YOUR LANGUAGE PLEASE...some of the most intelligent, artistic, gifted individuals suffer from severe depression. We may be depressed, but our keen insight never sleeps! Best wishes.

Alot of depressed people tend to become very withdrawn from society and family. Always feeling tired and lost, It isn't easy to even guess why you are feeling this way or why you are crying or sad. Depression affects your life mentally, physically, emotional and it affect the ones we love. counciling and family and support of friends are key factors in healing.

People who are educating themselves now exactly what they are going through.
Dealing with depression is hard, takes constant efforts and it is an every day battle.
Other people, doctors and medication can help you but the most important source is you.

i m sure alot do know they are. Some may not want to admit to that fact. Best to consult a mental health professional if someone thinks they are , there's always hope that things can be better, can get better.
