The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. Most people have a better developed left side, and so most people are right-handed. But the habit can be formed by force in childhood. It is extremely rare to be left-handed in China or Japan, because Oriental parents always force their children to use their right hands. It is hard for a left-handed person to eat with chopsticks while sitting at a round table with other people, or writing Chinese characters. I have not yet seen anyone eating with chopsticks with his left hand. So Oriental parents are pretty successful at that. If the parents do not interfere, more people will become left-handed.
I am born left-handed, but few people noticed it. I write and eat with my right hand, and use the hammer with my left hand. So I am ambidextrous.

There are no known causes. This transpired in a single hour discussion between scientists shown on National Geographic Channel.
Scientists can only explain that your left side of your body is controlled by the right side of your brain, and the right side of your body is controlled by the left side of your brain. Other than this, they can't point with certainty what makes a person right or left-handed.

I don't think it's that important. There are some people who write with their right, and some with their left, or even both. I used to write with my left, but now I'm used to writing with the right. =]
