"As discussed above, hominoid taxonomy has undergone several changes. Current understanding is that the apes diverged from the Old World monkeys about 25 million years ago. The lesser and greater apes split about 18 mya, and the hominid splits happened 14 mya (Pongo), 7 mya (Gorilla), and 3-5 mya (Homo & Pan)."

I see why people say that we share a common ancestor with modern day monkeys but we also evolved from primitive monkeys a long time ago. Just like we evolved from primitive protozoa some 3.7 billlion years ago. So stop staying we share a common ancestor with monkeys, say that we share a common ancestor with MODERN monkeys. That's I have to say.

Any comments?

Opposable thumbs, my friend. Opposable thumbs.

We are apes. We're just technologically and linguistically sophisticated.

"If monkeys are still around and they evolved too, then we didn't come from monkeys."
If the first Americans were Europeans, then why are there still Europeans? Seriously, did you even read the question asked? Common ancestor, buckaroo.

The ancestor modern primates, including us, came from resembled monkeys/apes more than human, yes. If you stick "modern" in there, you're going to have less people like the guy I quoted. Hopefully.

i have the same kind of gripe, concerning apes. monkeys i'm not so sure on, it was my impression that there are no human ancestors that could correctly be called monkeys - which would mean that they have only modern monkeys as descendants. apes + old world monkeys are called simians, not monkeys. new world monkeys are on a different branch, also (confusingly) called monkeys. eventually though it becomes ridiculous by anyone's standards. one could say that humans are a slightly odd-looking type of fish ;)

I work with a guy who looks exactly like a National Geographic depiction of a man-ape they ran on the front cover years ago. But he acts more like a 3 letter word for donkey, so I guess he's descended from horse ancestors instead.

We share 60% of our DNA with that of a Banana too.

Plus we evolved from a form of Ape. Basically one went one way and what became us went another. We learnt to stand up right and walk and talk. The other half staying in the jungles or whatever and evolved into what is now chimps and apes and stuff.

Or something like that.

cuz u dont see any more monkey slowly evolving or becoming more advanced in any way....if evolution is true, how come monkeys look the same as they did a 500 years ago?

Yes. Do you really believe that? I mean, look around you! Can you honestly say that this all happened by chance? That we all just blinked into existence? After, nothing comes from nothing. You know, the song from Sound of Music? (love that movie.) And that is also true in science. Someone had to have created it. And I believe that that someone is God.
I'm not trying to be preachy, but the chances of that happening is almost zero.
Also, if you're going to try to convert people to evolutionism, you might wanna consider not sounding so condescending.

Hey interesting question. I had a person raise cane about a bonano (?) monkey and that we have 98% DNA link. Couldn't find it. No nothing about genetics, but explained that it is called Darwin's" theory" and not gospel.
