I heard that it is possible to give regular asprin to a dog. Is it true? I have a 6 pound chihuahua, so how small would I want to cut up the asprin, or could I just give him baby asprin?

My dog has sporadic pain issues, and the vet said it would be ok to give him asprin, but didn't say what kind.

I would call your vet and ask exactly how much to give. I have given my beagles baby aspirin for pain but they much bigger. Aspirin is fine but too much can cause the blood to be too thin and then cause other problems. Just call and double check on the amount.

I do know that it is perfectly fine to give a dog chewable baby aspirin. Your dog is really small and you should call a vet to make sure exactly how much to give. In the right dose it will NOT hurt your dog but giving too much or too often WILL hurt it. So just call your vet and tell them what you are giving it for and how much your dog weighs and they will tell you the correct amount to give. Dogs feel pain just as we do and need relief. Don't pay any mind to those that told you not to give it at all they have apparently never had the occasion to treat a dog for pain without needing an exspensive script.

Obviously the people answering this has no idea what they are talking about. We give my daschund a chewable baby asprin for her arthritis, it's what the vet said to give her, and the vet knows best. He wouldn't have told us to give it to her if it was bad for her.
She's about 20 pounds, so I would say half of one would be fine for your little doggy friend. But just to make sure, I would call your vet.

OK, you should never give your dog any medication without your vet's approval. I have heard that baby aspirin is all right in some circumstances, but ... that's just something I read.
Please don't give your dog aspirin or any other drug until you discuss it with your vet. He or she can advise you about the dosage (that's a really small dog), how often, and whether baby aspirin is better than regular aspirin.

No human pain relievers are safe for dogs. Asprin as well as many other pain releivers can tear away at the stomach linning and cause sever liver damage. If your dog has joint problems I would suggest glucosamine or cosaquine. For any other problems you will need to see a vet possibly another one who is more up to date on veterinary science.

why do you think your dog needs a pain med and if he truly does then he has a serious issue that should be seen by his vet. your vet has after hours numbers available that can give you this info over the phone.
since it was your vets idea he really should be the one to advise you on type and dose

Don't give any dog a asprin or advil it can cause liver failure. Or at least thats what i have heard. So i wouldn't risk it.
Well hope your dog gets better.

You can give your dog baby aspirin. I know that when i take my dog to the vet to get his shots, the vet tells me that if my dog looks all down and to make him feel a bit better that i could give him half of a baby aspiring. So you could give your dog baby aspirin, your dog is small so 1/2 of it would help.

aspirin is ok for dogs, however if it is on certain medications such as rimadyll (sp?), it is not. Call your vet first though to get the proper dosage for your pet, either a vet or a vet tech should be able to provide this information.
