no speedo cable. it is electronic, the most common cause for thie is the quick disconnect at the back of the instrument cluster is loose or corroded. cluster has 2 hidden screws that hold it in place [gently pry off the covers to the right and left of the panal for access] they are thin strups and one goes around the panal dimmer rheostat i have never had to replace the sensor[in the back of the differential] or had a wiring problem with these.

There is no speedo cable on a 90 740. It's an electric unit with a speed sensor in the differential. Could be lose plug or bad ground in speedo head unit.

it is electronic, no cable, if is the speedo head ok you need to replce the sensor which is located in the rear differential, Yazaki and VDO heads dont go bad very often, so start with the sensor

make sure it's the cable. volvo's had problems in the past with the gear in the speedohead wearing out.

Buy a new cable and install it. Nothing else will work.
