How can you tell if your PS3 laser lens needed cleaning?

When it cant read the disc. But thats rarely. It'll take time to get dirty in there. Meantime just blow inside there.

Games are not starting or freezing. Sometimes it refuses to play all discs, except simple audio CDs, you'll hear strange noises from the disc drive, etc.
