About 13,000. And don't confuse Methecillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) with Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh eating disease). They are two different maladies.
The biggest way to avoid MRSA is to wash your hands on a regular basis. Never before can it be said as importantly as now: Your health is in your hands.

I don't know how many have died but yes be worried about getting it. This isn't something new. They are just now giving it attention. I actually contracted MRSA 2 years ago,. I ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks. It was determined that I contracted it from our local Wal-Mart. I heard them say on the news just to wash your hands. It is more than that. You can get it from a simple trip to the grocery store and touching a cart that someone else used that has it,. You can also be a carrier and not have any symptoms, 2 years later I still have flare ups of staph infections ( boils, cysts) they usually start off with a small bump that feels like a pimple that is really deep, then over a few days to a weeks time they fill with the infection. If you try to pop what you think is a pimple and it is actually a cyst or boil from staph it will get worse a lot worse. It can spread also. The one that I had was actually on the inside of my bottom lip. It swelled so much my chin was bigger than Jay Lenos no joke. It was hard to swallow because of the swelling. The doctors finally took a scapal pulled my lip down and sliced it open no pain meds and I was a wake. They did it as an emergency procdure. What a relief once they had it completly drained. So it is not just a thing that athletes in high school are getting or people that are not clean enough. It is normal people like me and you than can get it also

MRSA has been around for years. It is just recently that it has gained increased media attention. It is difficult to be certain how many people have died from this disease this year or any year prior to this due to the inaccuracies in reporting and failure to report this illness. There have been at least a few acknowledged deaths attributed to this superbug this year. The buzz surrounding this has been heightened by the recent study published by the Journal of American Medical Association which states, "we estimate that 94,360 invasive MRSA infections occurred in the United States in 2005; these infections were associated with death in 18,650 cases." The important thing is to protect ourselves against this bacteria through good personal hygiene. Here is a link to an article that may provide some insight into this.
