I am a Gordon die hard fan but to say he is best of all-time, I don't know. Petty did have more wins & yes they raced more races in those days, Sr was dominating in his time, then there is Pearson, Yarborough & Allison. Just like all sports, the sport changes over the years. I realize Gordon learned from Sr & the student has done very well. The one thing I disagree is when people say if Sr was still here racing(peace be with you Sr) he would still be breaking records & I disagree because when Jeff joined the NASCAR circuit full time 1993, Sr had already won his 7 titles but failed to win any after Jeff joined the circuit. Head to head races, Jeff won more races & championships than Sr, but that does that make him better. Everybody has their own opinion on who is greatest of all-time & they are entitled to their's. I can't say who is greatest because Nascar has changed so much over the years

That is like saying that Peyton Manning is the best Qauterback of all Time, or the 72 Dolphins are the best football team ever, or George Foreman is the best boxer.
You have to go by era's. Give Petty the same equipment gordon has when he was the same age, and see what happens. Take away that accident at Daytona and Dale Sr. has another 20 or so wins and 1 more championship. If you ask all the experts Tim FLock had more Talent.
I know somthing JG hasn't done. He hasn't won at Daytona in Indy Car, Nascar, and Lemans which A.J. Foyt did.
Mario Andretti did it in Nascar and Indy Car. Tony Stewart has won at multiple tracks in different types of cars. Jeff Gordon may be the best racer of the Modern Era, but you can't really compare him to Petty or Earnhardt. That would be like comparing Jordan to Wilt Chamberlain. One dominated the game, one made and changes the game.

Well, he is ONE of the greats. To elevate one over the other without having them go head to head is unfair to them.
I still get sick at the stomach over this idea that Gordon is somehow dwarfed by Earnhardt. The fact is, Earnhardt was slowing down, and I find the idea of him winning 20 more after the age of 50 laughable.
I've resigned myself to the fact that the haters will never accept Gordon- but the numbers don't lie. He's done WAY more than most and is in a league with the above named greats, though not YET at their level.
Gordon learned EVERYTHING he knows from Earnhardt?Did Dale Sr. get Gordon into NASCAR? No. Some students end up being greater than their teachers eventually. Many teachers dream of that.
The Top 5 of all time in no particular order are: Petty, Pearson, Earnhardt, Gordon and Waltrip.
Sadly, Davey Allison might have made this list were it not for his untimely death.

If you're so "educated" why don't you have a better command of English spelling, grammar, and punctuation?
Jeff Gordon would be the first to disagree with your rant. He always speaks of the legends with respect. It shows a maturity which many of his fans lack.
Not sure what "compotion" is. Is that like compost? As far as competition goes, if you look at the list of Fifty Greatest Drivers, most of them were right there competing with Petty, Pearson, and Yarborough. Six or seven guys winning everything, yep, that's the way it was -- and that's the way it would be now, if it weren't for caution flags every few minutes to tighten up the field. Nowadays NASCAR does everything they can think of to artificially level competition, and yet the amount of REAL competition remains about the same. We all know at the beginning of each year which six or seven guys have a real chance of winning the championship.
Arguing about "the greatest driver ever" will always be entertaining, because nothing can ever be proven, and everybody can pull out stats supporting their favorite. Richard Petty will always be the King, but I vote for David Pearson. He made exactly four active attempts to win the championship, and succeeded three times. His 105 total wins were achieved in only 574 starts. Driving part-time in 1973, Pearson won 11 out of 18 races, ten of those wins on superspeedways. That winning ratio of 61.1% has never been touched.
Jeff Gordon is the best driver competing in NASCAR right now, and certainly one of the best of all time. He's also learned how to come across as a warm, likable human being, and how to suppress or hide much of the whining and arrogance we used to see. If only all his fans would follow suit.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. They were all great in the time. Look at the cars, the technologies involved. Davy Allison was a great driver that was cut short and if you want dominate drivers. Look at what Tim Richmond did in a short time. Ernie Erwin was dominate for his short time. Comparing Dale, Richard and Jeff to each other is unfair to each of them. This conversation will be had again in 20 years when the new stars come along. Who knows, this youngster named Matt Martin coming up is already doing pretty well against the men and he is only 14 or so. I wonder if Jeff could have wrestled a 3600 pound car with no cool suits and no cold air blowing over his head and no power steering for 500 miles, would he still have 70 plus wins?

Oh yes Come to the Dark Side Jeff Gordon is the GREATEST DRIVER EVER, AND THAT THERE EVER WILL BE !!! Anybody who thinks anyone else is better is stupid and is not a real race fan. Anybody who doesn't like Jeff Gordon is evil and doesn't know what they are talking about. Everybody in the world should bow to THE GREAT GORDON!!! Gordon is God, all bow down!!! All the other drivers should just get off the track and let Gordon run all the laps by himself, because nobody can beat him anyway. He has never lost a race, and he has never had to bump anybody out of the way. HE WILL WIN A MILLION CHAMPIONSHIPS AND A GAZILLION RACES BEFORE HE RETIRES. Even though Jimmie Johnson won more races in his first four years than Jeff Gordon did in his first four, that doesn't mean that he isn't the greatest, because he was just lucky.
Congratulations. I have always respected Jeff Gordon as being one of the greatest racers of all time. But you and others who have posted similar things have succeeded in turning me into a Jeff Gordon hater. Good job.

He is one of the greatest..but not the greatest...He is not finished racing yet...I'd like to see what Dale Sr could have done had not died and drove a few more yrs ...But lets wait till Jeffy retires then lets talk about greatness.. I'm sure theres some driver someday will beat out Jeff as the greatest also...records always get broken, that why they have records...Every era in racing is different...someday they will look at this era that Gordon is in as something lame....Petty was a total different era, I'm sure if he were young and in Jeff Gordons equipment, you'd see the same results...Maybe by 2010, if Gordon retires which there was something on Nascar.com about that today....Then we talk about him as possibly the greatest..

Gordon: 16 years, 504 races, 81 wins, 35 crashes, 19 blown motors, 4 Cups trying for 5.
Earnhardt: 27 years, 576 races, 76 wins, 20 crashes, 55 blown motors, 7 Cups.
I watched all drivers mentioned race and imo Pearson was the best driver. Earnhardt the best racer.
You lost all credibility with that "300 less races" comment.

Gordon is good and there is no denying that period. But to consider him the best of all time is Crazy. He may one day be the best of all time but as of right now I dont think he is. I dont think there is one driver that is the best of all times because if u look at Petty and Sr they race in different era's of nascar. I think that in the Petty days, yes Richard was the best at that time and his wins and championships prove that. Then in the Dale Sr. era, just like Petty his stats prove he was the best of his time. Jeff will be the best of his time just like Petty and Sr. was in theirs. But i do think that once Jeff has finished his career that he COULD be looked at as the best but he will be looked at as ONE of the best that's for sure

What do you mean petty had no competition...He had lots of competition....It,s chrysler that had no competition..Richard Petty is the king!!!!7 cup championships...200 wins!!!!27 wins in one season...10 races in a row!!!!34 years of racing!!records that will never be broken!!!!A sign of the times...They call it progress...Hey jeff Gordon only has 120 more wins to tie petty!!!Yeah right!!!!!!It,s really too bad that nascar got away from it,s roots....If it hadn,t maybe us car makers would still be selling cars!!!Theres nothing stock about todays cars...They should change the name!!!Maybe they do,nt run enough races now...Maybe they should run in the dirt or the beach also!!!In stead of Lowes motor speedway it should called texas speedway!!!They are over paid just like other pro sports!!!Maybe everyone should be running different cars in stead of so many rules and regulations that all the cars are the same except for the body and paint!!!
