my boy cat keeps hacking up hairballs, but refuses to spit it out. he keeps swallowing it. and now he sounds as though he's "wheezing" when he breaths or purrs. how do i get him to throw it up instead of swallowing it?

you can get some hairball remedy at walmart which will either help bring it up or down

Unlike humans, cats have no gag reflex (which is why they can end up swallowing a lot of things). If he can't get the hairball past the back or his throat, he'll just end up swallowing it again as this is the only reflex cats have. I would suggest what the previous poster said - try and find some hairball medicine that will move it through his system the other way.

My cat does the same thing.

You can get a catlax which you can put on their paw - they lick it off and it helps pass the hairballs through and also prevents them as well.

Most of the time it'll go down through the digestive system and come out the other end. A dab of vasoline on the leg will help get him to smooth it down out of the stomach. If he won't lick it off his leg, you can open his mouth and put it on the roof of his mouth. Just a dab, it doesn't take a lot.

he needs to eat lots of grass to spit up a hairball. Take him outside and let him eat LOTS of grass!
