As a girl my mum was called a devils child by a group of Jehovah witnesses. I think I know her pretty well and she is a good person, for what reason would they call her that?

A Jehovah's Witness would not condemn any human as "a devils child".

Interestingly, Jehovah's Witnesses' own statistics count about 1 million active Witnesses in the United States, but about 2 million associate themselves by meeting attendance. Secular surveys generally note that about 1% (or 3 million) Americans identify themselves with Jehovah's Witnesses. In summary:
...1 million practice
...2 million attend
...3 million identify

Clearly, there are many who identify themselves as Jehovah's Witnesses while having little or no formal connection with the religion. This questioner is to be commended for seeking information about Jehovah's Witness beliefs, but should be cautioned that such information may be of limited use in understanding a family which is only tangentially committed to the faith.

As I always tell my children, "Name calling is not nice and it hurts people's feelings."
Does it happen sometimes? Unfortunately, yes. It seems to be human nature, it's not good and it is never OK. However, sometimes the name calling springs up when parents get irritated with their children. I have at times called mine little stinkers or said they were acting bratty. I've heard people who are not Jehovah's Witnesses call their children really horrible four letter word names. It's not right but it occurs.

The point is, we can't judge all Jehovah's Witnesses on what someone called your mum as a child. And as was mentioned, she might have been a handful when she was young.

Well the equal means that we've got a individual identify and could love to be known as by way of our identify as an alternative of Man, Woman, Boy & so forth is the equal means that God feels. Psalms eighty three:18 says "May folks recognise that you just, whose identify is Jehovah,You by myself are the Most High over all of the earth." The undeniable fact that his identify is recounted within the Bible suggests God wishes his identify to be identified & considering that we're his witnesses or fans, we're known as Jehovah's Witnesses.

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and first let me clarify something said by another poster- We don't celebrate b-days because there are only two examples from the Bible of people who did and both accounts were of people who don't worship God... plus it has roots in paganism etc. Our not celebrating has NOTHING to do with sex.

And for the matter at hand... As many have mentioned already- what was your mom like as a kid? Maybe she was a "hell raiser"? Or maybe she was throwing a tantrum when the witnesses called. Perhaps the comment was taken out of context. I've called my own children "little devils" or "demon children" and one of my cats is named "Demon" (he's a ferral cat and scratched me badly when I was stupid enough to try to catch him lol). My children are not LITERALLY demon children- but I have called them such (and sometimes good-naturedly with a smile on my face) when they're being bad or mischivous.

Haven't you noticed by now that when people are educated ONLY in religion, they tend to be very ignorant and arrogant?

Now.....that expression "devil's child" is one that I remember hearing about other kids when I was a boy. There were some nasty kids in the neighbourhood I grew up in and some of the parents would call the bad kids "devil's child" or something similar.

Religious people may be morons parading as educated folks (pres Bush for starters).....but don't mistake an old slang expression about a bad or rebellious kid as being something serious or religious.

Why not ask your mom (or your grandparents if they are still around) how your mom was as a little girl?

I wouldn't judge Jehovah's Witnesses based on what a certain group did. This is something most of us do not do.

Thats not the reason why we don't celebrate birthdays.

I would all depend out how your mother was acting at the time. I have referred to a child as being a "demon child" when they are out-of-line. Even good kids act bad at times. If they observed your mother during one of her outburst than they may have been discribing your mother's actions and not you mother.

If the were referring to you mother in general, than their comments were made with complete ignorance. These type of "Christians" are individuals who are giving the ones who are trying to walking in Christ's footsteps a bad name. I would like to believe that most people are good but being good will not get you into heaven, only being saved.

Depending on the age of you mother at the time, not being saved would have sent her to hell but it would not have maked her a "devil's child."

You should ask your Mom or the Witnesses who said it. It probably is you missed some of the conversation, sorry if it made you feel bad.

Did you know your "mum" when she was a girl? I don't think so.
I'm not a Jehovah's witness or anything. Just saying.
