A lot of times when a cat 'pees' in areas that aren't appropriate, they could have a urinary tract infection. A trip to the vet would be your best bet. And, no, she's not doing it on purpose. lol

She's not doing it on purpose, there is something wrong. Start by checking the litter box. Did you recently change the litter? Cats are creatures of habit and most don't appreciate a change in litter, even if you do. If you haven't changed the litter, make sure the box is accessable at all times. If there are other cats, they may need another box to keep the peace. Lastly, it could be a urinary or kidney infection, so if you haven't changed anything, then take her to the vet. I'm new to this, but have had 2 cats that lived to 18 years old, one that lived until 12 and I have 2 five year olds now. So I answer from experience.

Is there more foot traffic around the litter box? She might not feel safe in it and will find another place to pee.

If she's got a urinary infection a cat will often think the box is at fault and will try peeing anywhere BUT the box, trying to find a pain free way of getting the urine out. A vet would need to treat her for that.

Is the box clean? Like NOTHING in it, no smell to the bottom from urine being in it for so long--no poop smell?

Is the litter box covered? Some cats have been ambushed when trying to come out and become afraid of using it.

Is the couch new? Some smells from the factory in the leather actually will smell like cat pee to a cat, encouraging them to do it there. Same is true of bathroom rugs and some room carpets that have a particular chemical added to them for spot repellant.

I had a cat that started doing that as well a few years after I had him. And what happened is that he had a urinary tract infection. That is a common symptom for cats when they have a UTI. They start peeing in places that will get their owners attention.
My cat started peeing on my bed and I thought he was just being a jerk! Coincidently, I had a friend of mine who was interning at a vet clinic, and she told me that a lot of cats came in with UTI's that would pee in weird places, such as couches and beds... and so I took my cat to the vet and sure enough he had a urinary tract infection. So please take your cat to see a vet and you can get the medication he needs to help him and your problem will be solved :)

She could have a kidney infection. My male started to do that and I was really mad at him, but then I thought hey he has never done this before. So I started with the litter box, changed the box, bleached it out used different litter. Still peeing. So I changed his food, still peeing. Then we went to the vet and found he had a urinary trac infection. After a week of antibiotics and some TLC he stopped doing it.

The urinary tract infection is good advice but you didn't mention if she is declawd. Sometimes --because they remove the claw along with the first knuckle--they can get arthritis and it hurts them to dig in their litter and so if that is the case this is just the beginning of a bad problem--People do not realize how bad it is to have cats declawed.

Are you not feeding her enough? may be she is upset about something. Take a look around may be something is bugging her. May be you are not giving her enough space to use the restroom. Animals also tends to pee in the same area so i suggest that you use some sort of soap to get rid of the smell on your couch or he or she might continue peeing on your couches. I hope this help and good luck!

Has something changed recently in your life or your routine? Cats do tend to react to this quite dramatically.
If not I would check with the vet.

If you can rule out a change in her environment that is causing an emotional outburst, then I would take her to the vet. She may have a UTI and may be peeing on your sofa to communicate it to you.

You didn't mention if she's been spayed. If she hasn't, I would definitely get that done. It would help your situation greatly. Otherwise, I would agree with the other poster about spending more time with her. Perhaps check that the litter is always clean, and that you stick to the same brand that she loves and is used to. Best of luck to you!
