Freedom of speech (ie no censcorship)
or moral obligation to the upbringing and well being of our children?

PS - doesn't matter if you have children or not - I'm interested in your views on the moralities that society teaches our children.

Our children will be exposed to immorality, no matter what. There is no utopia. We must teach our children goodness regardless of what they see, and we do that only by example.

Censorship does not protect our children. It is the friend of deluded adults...

I don't believe you can legislate freedom of speech nor morality for that matter. Selfish Hedonism will lead many to say & embrace whatever their heart desires. The biggest problem I see is the children not being given a higher priority in individual homes. They're left to too many "Babysitters" to raise.
If enuf people in power forsake Godly morals then we'll see just how long that "Free" society lasts.
There will never be a "Utopia" on this earth that is man-made. The only one to come will exist when God sits in judgement over a new heaven & earth.
All we can do is try to brighten our own corner & be that candle in the darkness. We shouldn't bely our character for selfish indulgences. And others will continue to be true to their character & do nothing but.
Even so. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

I don't really see what one has to do with the other.

Freedom of speech is very important in a free, democratic society. However, just because you have the right to open your mouth, doesn't always mean you should. It's the right that's important, not the ability.

Parents in countries that do not promote freedom of speech still have a moral obligation to raise their children. A child raised correctly has the cognitive ability to discern good and bullsh** for herself.

This is a hard one. I would have to go with freedom of speech even though I do not like a lot of what is out there. I am responsible for what comes into my children's ears. We take that seriously, I mean our job of protecting our children. We have no TV channels, we don't get the newspaper and we monitor all computer use. Our daughter attended public school for the first time as a freshman in high school and we are home schooling our son. If we censor anyone....then we as Christians can also be censored. I am against it.

Freedom of speech.

Moral obligation is vague. Who's moral obligation would we like to instill in our children. Fanatics, liberals and others have different morals so they'd have different opinions on bringing up their children.

Without freedom of speech, the fanatic's moral obligation would be the only available moral obligation.

the moral obligation to the upbringing and well being of our children.
Protection of children is more important.
Adults can live - and be happier if children are safe, with a few sacrifices.
If an adult can't live without a vice, like alcohol, or porn; or can't communicate without swearing - then their genes aren't needed that badly.
How terrible to be so loosely put together. Adults should have dampers, some control or awareness of their surroundings.

Freedom of speech, no censorship.... how can you possibly have moral upbringing by censoring the truth.... Morality doesn't come from religion... we are brainwashed into thinking that societies and the moral fiber of our societies would be destroyed if religions came crashing down... the truth is.. religions are the first thing to destroy the moral fiber by bringing to us.. hatred, bigotry, prejudice, war... there was a time where the only reason for war was food shortages... today we have what it takes to solve that problem but religions keep wars going on and on... what does the church censor... rarely does it care about pornography( far to many preachers and priests have been caught with their pants down.. we know for everyone that was caught hundreds are practicing it)... it censors information on birth control and family planning and sex... it censors information on free speech... it censors information on cultural acceptance without religion (by claiming "evil" if not christian) it censors music (ex.. the big fuss about John Lennon's song "Imagine" it seeks to censor scientific observation.... the censor information about violence and war...it seeks to censor all information not controlled solely by them... so don't say that free speech isn't more important, because only through free speech can we over come the moral degradation of our societies...

Freedom of speech so that I may teach my children as I wish.
Morality isnt enough. However, the fruit of what I teach my children is apparant in their good moral behavior.

Freedom of speech. I and a whole lot of other veterans have shed their blod and lost their lives so YOU could come on here and in other places and state your views. Our Freedoms have been bought and paid for with the blood of those willing to take a stand in your behalf. Our Freedoms are the single most valuable things that we have and should NOT be given up lightly, they should be held onto and guarded for the absolute treasures that they TRULY are.

Now YOU, as a parent have the responsibility to raise your children properly and one of those responsibilities is teaching them what IS appropriate speech to listen to, watch and read. But, if YOU feel that there is something that YOU don't like, you have NO right to dictate to others what they can read, listen to or watch, as long as it isn't criminal to do so.

That's a toughie, but I think I'd have to go with freedom of speech. Parents and others can practice self-censorship. It can be done. I knew what my parents expected and what was acceptable. However, limiting freedom of speech, even rude, vulgar stuff could open the door to not allowing criticism of the government.

Both Ramjet.
Our Freedom of Speech is being controlled everyday as in the case of Y!A because of moron trolls reporting non-stop.
But stuff them!, though when it comes to bringing up children you should be careful not to swear violently or act violently infront of them.
