If you work in a university or a company that sells scientific instruments, you should address a person with a PhD with the title Dr. If you work for a company that deals with everybody, a title Mr. is sufficient.

I discussed this with a man with a PhD.
Only in academic or clinical circles should he be addressed as "Dr." his reason, he didn't want to be confused with an MD ( He was a clinical psychologist.)
He signed his name on formal correspondance as John J Jones, PhD.
In less formal circumstances, he was just "John."

If the reason you were given the business card was for business reasons, then use Doctor. If he was giving you the card for a non business reason, then I would not hesitate to ask which he prefers.
Please be aware that Germans with PhDs should always be addressed as Doctor ......., if fact where you would use Herr Schmidt, if he was a PhD doctor, he would be referred to as Herr Doctor Schmidt.

Maybe, I've found that if you are a student and your referring to a professor then yes especially if they are a professor in a useless field, and they will get really mad about it, in the real world, yes it is improper, but depending on the degree, and the reason you are contacting them, they probably wont care.
