So here is the scoop....I am a 13 year old girl and ever since I could remember I have wanted to be in the military. A lot of people think I am just joking around with it.... But I have made up my mind and this is a definate plan for me in the future.
Now I have it narrowed down (most desired to less tastefull)
to The Air Force, Marines, or Navy...But I have heard from an Army Wife that I Know that a woman will not be put in the line of fire and that I would not be able to reach my goal (goal NOT dream) of being a combat pilot or sniper!!! So please someone with knowledge and non-byast views give my answer????

Les Aspen removed the exclusionary rules on female combat aviation in 1993. There was a rather famous incident a few months later when the first female Navy carrier pilot crack up her F-15 while landing.

Don't discount the Army. You can fly rotary wing aircraft for them and they will not go out of their way to keep you out of combat. Lots of Army female pilots are 'combat pilots' these days.

As for sniper, forget it. You would need to be in an 11 or 18 series MOS. They are both closed to women.

Good luck on those wings!

BTW, lots of folks are saying that women are not 'allowed in combat' -- but nobody checks permission slips before shooting at you. Just because you cannot (for now) be a sniper, or in a MOS that has the primary mission to 'close with and destroy the enemy' does not mean you cannot make a serious battlefield contribution. It also does not mean that you will not have opportunities to 'close with and destroy the enemy' in the performance of your other duties. But if you end up flying, you will end up a combat pilot.

During WWII, because of the severe battles all over the world. There are men shortage in US for production jobs. Women were asked to be test pilots for the military planes. They test prototypes and deliver the planes to the bases once they are done in assembly. There is a PBS epidsode about female pilots during WWII. I don't know if there are any reasons that there aren't any women fighter pilots today.

Yes, many are flying every type of combat and support aircraft, from C-130 transports to A-10 Thunderbolts and F/A-18 Hornets. Same with helicopters, flying Apaches and Kiowas, as well as Blackhawks and Chinooks.

My job requires my to talk to aircraft on a daily basis. I have talked with several female pilots (of all 3 branches) on the other end of the radio and have even worked with a few in garrison. You can be a female fighter pilot doing gun runs and dropping bombs with the best of them. It happens in Iraq and Afghanistan everyday.
