If you are a minor say 17, can your parents sign you up to join the military without your consent? Just basically sign some papers and off you go into the U.S. army? Any articles talking about this would be great too.

Its my friends situation. His dad keeps threatening to sign him up for the U.S. military and I have told him time and again its illegal for his dad to do that, just wanted more answers though.

There is now way his dad can do that. It is different if he elects to sign up for the military. The only time that parents sign anything is if they are under the age of 18 years old. After turning 18, parents have nothing to do with signing anything.

You cannot be forced into the military. You would have to sign papers, and frankly in an all volunteer military, no one wants someone that doesn't want to be there. The only thing you would need at 17 is parental consent to sign the enlistment papers.

So, you're safe.

No.

Unless there is a draft - military service is voluntary.

Even with a draft that's not going to happen for a couple of reasons:

One, 17 is under the legal age for military service in the US.

Two, if there were a draft in effect - parents wouldn't be needed or involved in the process.

No they legally cannot, and to try is grounds for a minor to emancipate himself. I joined when I was 17 with my parents consent. But they made sure that the paperwork was in order, they have to see birth certificates and if your parents are divorced they have to make sure that their divorce is final with no imperfections. they take that very seriously as you can imagine if a soldier dies in war or training who was not legally binded to the military..........many a careers would be ruined.

Its bullshit. Not even a parent can force you to join the military or sign you up. Even if you are just 17. I would tell the kids dad to STFU, and if he honestly thinks he can do it to go ahead and try. Because he cant.
He sounds like a drunk. Willing to bet hes a drunk isnt he?

Sounds like their is a good story why his Dad is scaring him.

Since your "Friend" has to sign the contract that's a big "No his Dad cannot do that". He does have parental abuse privileges if your friend deserves it though.

The US Military no longer allows forcible conscription.

Sounds like his Dad just wants him to behave and fly right - is worried about his future. Perhaps your "friend" needs to consider that.

Not an option. Conscription even with the parents permission has been illegal for almost 40 years

No one can be forced into the military. One has to sign up for themselves.

No. But you can sign up, with their consent.

If you get there consent and sign up, its not the same as signing up as an adult; you cant be deployed anywhere until you turn 18.
