Is there anything wrong with optimism. Is there anything wrong with believing that there is more to your life then just one short time on Earth? Hope brightens people's lives and yet you don't want it?

Argue all you want but I know that every Atheist that answered to this is not optimistic and does not have hope for themselves after they die. And some of you are assuming that I am a Christian. Check the question I never said that. However I am a Christian, but I respect all religions because they have hope for the afterlife.

What's so bad to having a logical progression to your thoughts, regardless of belief? Your jump in logic (atheist = hopeless) is astounding to me. The result of it is that I am less likely to consider any future points you make in a discussion.

Hope is fine, but that does not seem to be what your actual question is about. "Is there anything wrong with believing..." is the dead giveaway to your true motives, but you probably did not even realize that. My answer to this, primary thought in your head, is: yes, there is definitely something wrong with being so lazy that you have failed to see the inherent inconsistencies in your beliefs, and in that failure have allowed yourself to be overtaken by a fantastical land where a totally good god does necessarily evil deeds.

I think it would be better if people did not hold this belief of: more than one life, or this is not the end; because this would make people more productive, and lend a sense of urgency to those things which people have always wanted to do, but always found a reason not to do.

Nothing wrong with optimism! But I prefer the rational optimism offered by reason, which I find preferable to the unwarranted optimism offered by fables. People do want and seek comfort, and there's nothing wrong with that. Life is hard after all. But there's no good point to making hardship bearable through untruths masquerading as truth.

How does being an Atheist prevent one from being optimistic? Honestly sometimes you people really need to get a grip.

I could care less what floats your boat, I just refuse to allow it to be taught to children in science class, or used as the basis of law.

EDIT.
You are correct I don't have any hope for after I die, have you any idea how completely absurd that sounds. After death?? Have you ever seen a dead body, trust me it isn't going anywhere.

I have lots of ambitions and plans for my LIFE, not my damn death.

who told you atheists don't have hope? i 'hope' the redsox win the world series...this is different than 'hoping' god will heal aunt bee...the redsox are real, you see and god, well, let's just say he would lose if he had to prove his existence in a court of law.
so, you can believe what you want, but if it affects public policy, like abortion, gay rights, stem cell research etc., then whatever that policy is should at the very least be rooted in reason, logic, and everyday reality, not on hope, faith, or superstition.

ja bitte - thanks for telling us what we already know about christians...and that is, that no matter what you hear, read, or learn, you will stick to your misguided and naive beliefs despite all evidence to the contrary...and you wonder why we, especially me, despise and detest religious fanatics.

Who ever said it was bad to hope? Just because you don't believe in a religion doesn't mean you hate everyone in the world and want to ruin everyone's lives. I hope for things just like normal people.

I don't care if you wish to believe in an afterlife. Respect that I think life ends after I die, or not. It's up to you.

i don't mind people having hope, there are some denominations of christians, like quakers and unitarians that i admire, but what i don't like is when that hope is packaged up with ignorance, bigotry and self righteousness. it also used to annoy me that they failed to grasp even the most fundamental arguments for the natural origins of the universe and life. but i then started to teach and realised there are some people out there who are just naturally incapable of stringing facts together to get the bigger picture, (these people are really frustrating to teach). i now just accept that everybody is different. but this failure to understand should not be allowed to shape and control our future.

I'm optimistic and full of hope and I don't believe in God. What's the big deal. I don't need God to have a good outlook on life.

So if I hope that by killing three children a year the Gods will spare our village from famine and make our crops plentiful, that is okay by you? Because I at least have hope in something outside of humanity?
