Why is he mean? We have a cat that was abused by his previous owners. He was a huge jerk and hated everyone. We gave him his space, and slowly, gradually earned his trust. We didnt try to pick him up or force him to do anything he didnt want to do, we didnt try to sneak up on him to pet him. We talked nicely to him and gave him his space, and let him approach us. We've had him 12 years now and he's the sweetest thing ever ....To us. He still hates the rest of the world though.

A mean cat? I'm just guessing here but if the cat is mean-spirited in that it constantly scratches and hisses, there could be a problem with the animal. Sometimes animals become agitated and hostile when they are unwell or are experiencing things like hearing loss, a splinter in the paw etc. Figure out the problem and it will go away. Unless of course the cat is simply psychotic in which case, good luck.

Control isn't the word, it's cooperation - so you both can live in harmony. A mean cat is responding out of fear or something that is fear based. Pushing his buttons isn't helping either one of you, so you need to know what triggers the response and avoid that or find a way around it.
If the cat needs more personal space, give it to them. Don't be grabby or try to pick them up if they're afraid of being dropped or being attacked. Don't use loud voices if it clearly frightens them. Don't do anything that makes them feel they need to protect themselves from you or from other strangers.
A cat that's pressured is going to react negatively. Be considerate and patient and the cat will be calm and become nicer. It's no picnic for them to be trapped in a house where they can't get away from the people inside to feel comfortable and safe.

the big question is why is the cat mean? Most cats are not mean as a general fact it is usually becouse they have been mistreated at some point. Patience and love are most important and establishing trust with the animal. Talking to your vet or an animal behaviorist might help

I have found an effective solution to miss behaving felines! This littler trick has worked for all of my cats and it is harmless to them. Try getting a water spritzer bottle, you know the ones that are down the "Hair Care" isle?. Anytime your cat does something that is not good, slightly squirt them. Most cats hate water! It won't take them long to associate what they are doing with getting wet. I have had 99% effectiveness with this little trick. I wish you the best!

I don't agree with the two previous answers posted here.
If your cat is mean, take it to the vet for an examination. There may be something physically wrong with your cat which is causing it to act "mean."
Could you explain in detail what you mean by "mean?"

Put him in the o\/en and set to bake. At least then you will have controls of how hot you make it and soon you will have dinner. Just kidding, but really. i dont recommend that. I'm sure the cat is just getting used to you. Feed it and loathe it. Cat will change. By the by, if this works name the cat mr. bojangles in honor of the late great Mister Bojangles. RIP.

When kitty does something mean squirt him with a squirt gun. When kitty does something good, give him a treat.

Just like any other organism, take something that the cat needs like food, and feed it to the cat if it does good and starve the cat if it has done something bad.
