can a bird die if you cover its cage with a thin sweater for along time

It depends on how long you consider a 'long time'.

Over night is what is recommended. Covering at least half the cage with a light material will keep drafts from the air vent out and make them feel safer while sleeping.
Keeping the sweater on there for a long time could cause problems though. Dust could build up, causing respiratory problems. If it is thick enough to keep light out then the lack of vitamins from the sun could kill a bird or cause a variety of health problems. So yes, it is possible to kill a bird from leaving it covered too long. I'm not talking about just overnight though, more like...weeks, months...

Leaving the bird's cage completely covered that long purposely is abuse in my opinion. It's bad enough that we cage birds, but then not letting it see out of the cage? How would you like to be that bird?

Why would you have a bird if you want to keep it completely covered for long periods of time?
it could harm the bird if it were kept this way.

Anyone who would do this to a bird should simply sell or give away the bird. That way the person will not be bothered by the bird, and the bird can be allowed to have a decent life. Anything else is just cruelty to a defenseless bird.

Why would you want to cover your bird for a long time? They need daylight the same as you do. I cover mine at night, he sleeps better, but as soon as he is awake in the mornings, he wants the cover off, and he is rearing to go. He spends most of his time out of the cage during his waking hours. I do put him in the cage, when I have to leave the house, don't trust him to be flying around when I am not here, but a bird needs to exercise.

Overnight is fine, a long time is iffy. Dust can build up, causing your bird to suffocate or develop respiratory problems.

I usually partially cover my bird cages at night with a light-weight towel. It keeps them quiet and makes them feel safer.
