Basic math indicates that if a group is comprised of roughly 50% women & 50% men, then when the men marry multiple wives, more men are forced to remain single (and childless?) forever.
What becomes of those men?

I made this a religion question because there are very few polyandrous religions. This is not simply an intellectual discussion. Polygamy in the largest faiths that practice it prevent women from marrying more than one husband, but allow men to marry more than one wife.

MIDGE: Islam is also polygamous. (A man may take up to 4 wives. Women may only marry one man.) Mormons are no longer polygamous, although there are offshoots that still push for legal polygamy, and some families live in polygamous-like relationships.

Historically, such men have usually been sent off to fight in wars and get themselves killed. In a more civilized society, polygamy of the other sort (one woman with many men) may also be allowed, so that's another way that these 'excess men' could be used up (although these polygamous marriages are usually less stable than those that go in the other direction, due to the differences between male and female psychology).

To get an idea of what you're talking about, say a society of 10 million people practiced polygamy. Every day 1000 more adolescents are turning 18+ (disregarding age requirements for marriage). The pool of opportunity doesn't drain quickly, if you follow me.

See.. now I have a different perspective on this. I can imagine a wife with many husbands for example... This brings about some balance in your "what if"
The whole polygamy deal has been given short thrift for apparently no sound reason. Consenting adults can come to quite complicated agreements.. so why not in the cot? I mean... it doesn't even have to involve sex between all partners.. just a loving understanding!

The FLDS kick out their tenage boys so the girls can marry the older men. It's a sad truth. But, i the ones that aren't so strict, they find one wife. The whole world isn't polygamous though...

Isn't that a problem for the boys and girls of a polygamous society to sort out? I like the answer given above about them asking if it's OK to masturbate.... somehow that seems like the most reasonable one here. lol
