before the internet became so easy, my sister started doing our family tree. she wrote letters and requests for certificates and such. it takes a bit longer but it's a little cheaper sometimes. get as much info as you can from your family and go from there. some census records can be found free on line and the social security death index is also free. there is a site called cindis list of geneology sites. it gives the names of other sites. some may be free or less expensive. happy hunting and good luck.
i forgot, the mormons have a great site. i can't remember the name though.

Hi yes some sites cost money but there are some free features to those sites so try posting messages there .. Most states have a genealogy section to thier pages try tat.. Latter Day Saints has a free social security death index and you can look stuff up there some people have already added thier lineage to that persons name so you might get alot of info there ... It is time consuming but once you get started it is alot of fun... Good luck

The best thing I can tell you is to look for a local library who offers ancestry.com for free. They have listings from different countries. I found it allot easier to concentrate on my family tree with no distractions.

Good luck.

Some sites I use are:
www.rootsweb.com (sister site of www.ancestry.com, but free to use)
www.familysearch.org (The Mormon site)
http://genforum.genealogy.com (a message board site where you might find others looking for the same family as you, and/or you can post your own message)
www.gencircles.com
www.cyndislist.com

Just type "free genealogy sites" in a search engine, like :
google, Yahoo, www.ask.com , www.dogpile.com, www.altavista.com, etc.

Start with http://www.familysearch.org/

It's free, highly respected, has loads of information, and free software for you to start with to help organize your information.

Also, try http://www.rootsweb.com

It's a free subsidiary of Ancestry.com now days, but has lots of information.

Happy hunting.
