So true about the being close and a weapon being used against you part.I did find a stun gun resembling a cell phone that has a strap that releases when taken away and deactivates...it's not legal I know, but i think it's ridiculous not to have one.Foam or gel mace and a boat horn/alarm w/strobe light seem to be good idea too...thanks!

Carrying anything other than spray means that you have to get close to someone to use it, and if taken away, it could be used against you. Keys, held in your hand, and between your fingers makes an excellent weapon for self defense.

Carrying a samurai sword or a bazooka around would be overkill LOL. Obviously you don't want to do that. But for the average individual who is just looking to have something handy, some sort of tool to protect themselves, it can be a useful and possibly life-saving solution provided you have the proper training and know what to do. It is never cowardly to defend yourself, esp when there is a threat of immediate danger to your life and loved ones. You must never fight fair in a self-defense situation. Fight unfairly. The important thing you must maintain is the appropriate level of response. Do what is needed to neutralize the situation and get out or run. There is no need to stand over your broken opponent and gloat or continue the defense if there is no longer a threat. To do that would turn you from a victim into the attacker. This way you ensure that you don't "mess up" the attacker bad. Despite the outcome you've shown you still have some regard for another human being. I carry and have used pocket sticks and fistloads like Kubotans and ComTech Stingers and I cannot say they are entirely legal - unregulated perhaps. I have never carried or used pepper spray. The legality of these tools is something you have to look into yourself. Every community has its own laws and regulations so it's important to observe them and retain your standing as a good citizen. In lieu of that fact, one point that I and others have mentioned is the concept of an improvised weapon. In short the use of common everyday objects - a chair, a newspaper, a garbage can, a soda can, a pen, a flashlight, dirt or even a dollar bill - as a weapon. This is the height of being smart in self-defense. If you know how to observe your environment and spot them, you are never without a weapon.

Check with your local police station or community college to see if they offer self defense classes. I'm not talking about learning karate or judo. I'm talking about learning hit and run tactics, and how to make an attacker release a hold on you. The classes should also cover prevention manuevers like walking and parking in well lit areas, keeping a safe distance from strangers, using reflective surfaces like glass windows to see who is behind you, etc.
Try to avoid weapons of any kind. Most require you to be close to the attacker and that is an unsafe area for a weaker victim. Also, a weapon could be taken away from you and used against you.
Although I never lived in Chicago, I used to work in Chicago for many years.
Good luck.

If you have the time, I'd recommend martial arts. learn how YOU can be the weapon, and more importantly how to defend yourself against weapons. but if you must carry a weapon, remember what the guy said about the possibility of it being taken away and used against you. once again this is where some training would come in handy. most thugs can't handle someone who actually knows how to handle themselves. not only that but the more that you learn, the more confident you will be, and the more confidence you will carry yourself with. predators pick up on this and will usually shy away from people that exude such confidence. most importantly, weapon or not, work on maintaining your presence of mind. keeping your head will keep you alive. panic is your worst enemy in a dangerous encounter. good luck to you.

Use your damn head and carry a Kaybar knife or similar.

You don't want a chainsaw or mallot - a chainsaw is too big and a mallet is amazingly useless. Buy a blade and if you need to have scare value, you will have scare value. That hooked end makes most people visualise their intestines and have second thoughts.

Just don't be so thick as to actually use it unless you absolutely have to. Knives are a 'sometimes' tool.

The only thing about weapons is that they can have them to or take them and use them on you. If you get a weapon make sure you prperly know how to use it and would if need be. Yes, I would consider moving small town with less crime if you feel unsafe.

Carry a cane with a nail point on the end. You can just use it to walk along like an umbrella, but if anyone comes at you, you have a weapon. You could also carry an ice pick in your purse.
