...It seems Ricky Craven didn't mean Gordon was the best driver ever. He meant Dale Earnhardt was the best driver ever (hands down). Here is his statement:

..."Had my years in Nextel Cup been between 1986 and 1995, the choice would easily have been the late Dale Earnhardt. His run during those years was phenomenal".

You need to keep the statement in context with what his first article was about. Ricky's years in NASCAR could only be with one of the drivers in his original story: Petty, Earnhardt, or Gordon. Had Craven's years in NASCAR been during Petty's prime, Petty would have been his choice. The same thing goes for Dale Sr. Remember, Craven's article was about the best racer that HE ever raced against. Gordon, Petty, and Earnhardt were too far apart from one another for Craven to catch them all in their prime. The only one he raced against in his prime was Gordon, which is why he got the vote.

Ya know this argument is as fruitless as trying to pick the best rock band of all time.
If you go by stats, and also take into consideration the time in which he's done it- the choice is Gordon.
Yet- even i will admit there's more to it. "3" won his share of races, including several that no ordinary racer would have won. There are no stats to quantify that.
They're both great!
And no, Audrey! My driver is not a weenie! Just a winner (wink)

he said Jeff Gordon was the best driver he personally race against. meaning the years he raced Jeff was winning more than anyone...his other statement he is trying to say if he had race with dale Sr from 86 to 95 he would pick dale Sr cause he would have only raced with Jeff for three years ...he would have to had race from 86 to present to compare the two in his eyes.

He was stating Dale Sr. was the best of his ERA not the best he (Craven) had ran against. Hope this helps clear it up.
