you know that swirlly symbol thats on the logo and all over the games and sets?
(I've always wondered this?)

The proper name for that symbol is an "asterisk". That symbol was used in the credits for other Goodson-Todman game shows (on the top and bottom of the "A Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Production" credit) as well as the late Mike Douglas' talk show for many years as part of his show's logo.
