I want be in the 82nd Airborne but I heard that when you get out of boot camp you go strait to a unit they put you in. Is there a way of switching units or will I be stuck? Thanks.

After basic, you go to Advanced Individual Training. They decide where you go. But if you want to go airborne, I suggest you stop by the Orderly Room during basic training and ask. You may end up getting airborne training, but again, they decide which group you will go to.

You can't pick specific UNITS; but you can pick specific stations of choice, if that option is available to you on your contract when you initially sign up. In many cases, picking a certain station of choice will simultaneously almost guarantee you a spot in the primary unit stationed there. In 82nd's case, also getting airborne school in your contract would help get you in, on top of picking that post as your station of choice. When you get out of Basic Training, you're then sent straight-away to AIT to learn the skills of your MOS; the exception being if you're OSUT and your AIT happens to be on the same post in the same place as Basic, such as Ft. Benning for infantry. If you've already signed a contract and either didn't have station-of-choice available--or did, and picked a station other than the one 82nd is at--you're more or less out of luck, at least until it comes time for you to re-enlist and you're once again offered station of choice as a bonus to re-enlistment.

EDIT: Intracircumcordei seems to have pulled that straight from the regulation; hard to get a better answer than that.

The Army and all of the other branches of the military will let you pick a carrier field. i.e. airborne rangers. It is not standard practice to let you pick the unit, but if your only going to go in with that as your requirement, have the requiter put it in writing on your contract when you sign up. That is on the contract, not on his paperwork and try to get it for you, I could do that.

If it is in writing and on the contract you will get it or get the option to get out. A contract is a contract and it is between the Gov. and You. If you have parents in this picture and I hope you do, you need then to help you with this first and hardest contract of your life.

I have ret. but did 5 in the Army and 35 in the Air Force, I have seen a lot of guy's and gal's that didn't get what they said they were to get, so do it right, be safe and learn your job well, and don't for get to write home. It is the lease you can do for your parents now, they gave you 17 of the best years of your life and theirs. God's Speed and good luck

I've never heard of anyone who was able to switch units... or choose which unit they went to, and I know plenty of airborne guys. Be very thorough in researching that.

Subscribe to the "Army Times" magazine alot of the times there are soldiers in the back of the mag that are willing to change their assignments. You might have a chance to switch with them.

If you have Airborne school in your contract they have to honor that. If it isn't there it's the Army's call. Other than that though don't count on "choosing" anything.

Get Airborne School in your contract and you will go.

and don't let MEPS tell you they can't.... they can.
If they tell you no, say you will go join the Navy or something instead
