Know that God loves you and wants the best for you, but that He is holy and sin separates you (and me) from Him. Jesus Christ paid the price for that sin. His free gift to you is that you only need to accept this gift.
I guess you could look at in several other ways if you'd like something a little more concrete than that. There's the ABC's of salvation - ADMIT you're a sinner, BELIEVE Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God and died for your sins, and CONFESS it to others. You could also look at the Romans Road at Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, 10:9, 10:10, 10:13, and 11:36, also of course understanding John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
Hope that helps.

Did you know there are ABCs to becoming a Christian? Admit, Believe, Confess. If you admit you're a sinner, believe that Jesus came to earth and died for YOU! and if you confess your sins to him and ask his forgiveness, you can be saved. Did you know that even if you'd been the only person on this earth, Jesus still would have come to earth and died for you?! Remember John 3:16--"For God so loved the world, that be gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life."

Mark 1:14-15 -- "Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. REPENT, AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL."
Ac 2:38 -- Then Peter said to them, "REPENT, and let every one of you BE BAPTIZED in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall RECEIVE the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.
Repentance means stop disobeying God's commands and start obeying them -- change your way of life, from self oriented to God oriented.
A Christian is one in whom the holy spirit dwells and leads to doing God's will:
Romans 8:9 -- But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Matthew 12:50 -- For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."

The first step to becoming a Christian is to realize your guilt as the Holy Spirit hath shown it unto you and realize you have to die to self first. Self is our biggest enemy, not the world but our ownselves. Reflect upon the love of Christ. Paul made it clear in Romans 2:4 that it is the goodness of God that leadeth men to repentance and not guilt although it plays its part. But it is the love of Christ that is to draw us to Him and how merciful, loving, compassionate our Saviour is and accept Him but confess your sins. For God cannot forgive an unrepenting sinner that is the only thing that cannot be forgiven. Always continue to pray and agonize in pray asking further for the Lord to show to you your defects and how God can work on your life victorious in Christ that you mayy be the righteousness of God in Christ.
For He became sin for us who knew no sin, that we may become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Cor 5:21

Condemn other religions without actually studying them. Then, overlooking the obvious flaws in the Bible, proclaim Christianity as the one true religion.

The typical and conventional way is by swearing faithful allegiance to Jesus Christ and his authentic church, via the sacrament of baptism.
Some folks think baptism isn't necessary for salvation, so they figure a mere profession of faith will do it.
I wish 'em luck.
And since you're thinking about becoming a Christian, you might as well become Catholic.
It costs no more to go first class.

Believe, repent, receive, commit
Believe first of all that Jesus Christ is the son of God, that He came to earth to die on the cross to pay for your sin, and that he rose from the dead to grant us eternal life.
Repent of your sin. All of us are sinners. No one has lived up to God's standard.
Receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
Commit yourself to living for God through His grace, and to being the holy individual that He has made you.

Accept Jesus as your savior who died on the cross to save you of your sins. Ask for forgiveness. Believe that God is the creator of all things. You should go to church and ask a pastor or minister that question. Maybe get baptized.
