The world’s oldest history book, the Bible, draws attention to the first rainbow and gives the reason for its continued appearance. It reports that God made a covenant, a promise to the survivors of the world flood, namely, Noah and his family, that “no more will the waters become a deluge to bring all flesh to ruin.” And as a sign of this covenant, God said to Noah: “My rainbow I do give in the cloud, and it must serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” (Gen. 9:8-16) What a splendid way to remind mankind of God’s promise!
Some argue that the Bible was not actually here describing the first appearance of a rainbow, but that from that time forward a new significance was being attached to its existence. However, the Bible presents it as something introduced at that time. Apparently atmospheric conditions prior to the great Flood did not allow for the formation of the rainbow. Even today certain atmospheric conditions must exist for it to appear.
Although the Bible’s comments are brief, they give the why of the rainbow, and to this day those of faith see in it reassurance that God still cares for man.

Biblically it was what gave Noah the sign that the flood was over and there would never be another - God's Covenant -

For others it may be Peace or just the love of Nature as in Wordsworth -

I remember we learned the colours at school through the phrase "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain"
Not very pleasing to us to remember that here in Yorkshire!
To me personally as well as the above it shows that beauty can come of contrasting things - you can't have a rainbow without rain! and if it starts to rain to "spoil" a sunny day I take my grandsons to look for the rainbow as I did their Father and uncles when they were little boys and told them to hope that one day we might find the pot of gold at the end of it!

First it was in the Holy Bible when God created a rainbow
in the sky and made a promise never to destroy the earth
again by flood.
Then the Gays stole the Christian rainbow symbol and
started using it as their own, making rainbow colored flags
and signs for their own meaning. Guess they were too
dumb to come up with something original for themselves.

I know about the Religious element and the mythical pot of gold but in my house 'rainbow' reminds me of happy days with kids watching Bungle,Zippy and George and then my 'great faux pas'. About 20 years ago I thought I'd surprise my 2 little granddaughters with matching crocheted 'rainbow' circular blankets. However, the excitement quickly turned to cries of 'oh nan, that's wrong'. I'd started each rainbow from the middle working outwards with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet instead of the other way round but I soon convinced them that their blankets were 'special'and 'magic' !

I realized something., "God" made the rainbow as a sort of contract, if you will, to symbolise that he he never use a flood to destroy the earth. Now mainly Christians and Jews are anti-gay becuase it is against their belief. So why do you choose to associate gays with rainbows, if you so called "disapprove" of them. So you are ether compliment homosexual, saying that they are as beautiful as a "contract" with god, or insulting God by giving the ones hie does not support his symbol.
