You've got to win it before it can be taken away.
Every driver whos ever won or lost a Championship did it by rule and history is repleat with what might have beens.
For example, in 1996 Gordon lost the Title to his HMS competitor, Terry Labonte, by 37 points. That probably wouldn't have happened if any of the following hadn't occured.
Blowing an engine at Rockingham for a 40th place finish.
Having ignition problems at Louden for a 34th place finish.
Having to exit the Daytona 500 because of all things, a "handling" problem, for a 40th place finish.
Crashing at Talladega.
Any one of which most likely would have propelled Gordon to what could have been an unprecedented 4 Cups in a row.
What if that ignition problem had struck Labonte instead of Gordon? Same outcome, 4 in a row.
Didn't happen, did it?
Every multiple Champ won some he didn't deserve, lost some he did deserve and that's racin'!
After all, in the realm of the "would have-should have" game, Petty could have taken 13 Cups as he finished second 6 times. Earnhardt finished second 3 times, so ten sounds about right in the could have been category.
Here's a biggie. What if David Pearson had raced full time for 27 years. You know he only raced full time in 4 years and won 3 Cups, right? The thought of that makes 7 look easy.
Every Champion knew the rules going in as to how points would work and they raced accordingly and racin' happened.
In 2006, Gordon lost the Chase, actually finishing 6th, because of three DNF's in a row. Junior finshed ahead of him and he never finished higher than 4th in any Chase race but he was running at the end of all of them.
It wasn't the rules that cost Gordon, it was lack of team performance when it counted most and racin' luck, the unusually bad sort for Gordon.

Gordon has never had a championship taken away from him. The championship playoff rules that NASCAR now abides by came into being because of NBC's concern that they would lose viewership to the NFL if another driver like Matt Kenseth clinched the title with eleven races to go, as he did in 2003.
If Jeff, or any other driver wins the championship it will be under the "Chase" or playoff rules, and nobody has had any championship taken away under those rules.
I do think that there should be some sort of award for the driver who is the points leader at the end of the regular season, but that should have nothing to do with the championship points standings.

Well you are forgetting about the year that Kurt Busch won the championship that Jeff Gordon should have won. There was also a close race between Gordon and Matt Kenseth a few years ago and this is when both drivers Kenseth and Busch won their first championships. Had Gordon won the championship Busch stole from him during the first year of the Chase, Gordon would already have 5, and he would be working on Championship number 6, simple as that, and he would be one step closer to winning 7 championships, and tying Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty for most championships. That would tie him with the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, so I think that they need to make a Chase where everyone gets what they want and everyone is happy.

Jeff won the championship last year as an owner, he's listed as Jimmie's owner so technically he did win a championship as the owner of the 48. The same thing happened in 2003 when Mark Martin won the owners championship with the 17/

not sure why you all ask a simple Q and then when you go to A then there is a book you are suppose to read before you A.
All I can say is this is the NA$CAR that you all support and as long as you do, this crazy abnormal way to run a racing series will keep on going. It will either drive you nuts or make you realize there are other things that are more important than a poorly run cup division that France is trying so hard to destroy.
when all this chase crap started the top35 and having to run a GWC at the end of a race I stopped watching the top series that I once loved every weekend. I now watch races at tracks I like not because NA$CAR is on and I get along with myself much better.

The deal is Mike helton The president of nascar was in love with Dale Sr. so right after his death he change the point system to 4 ever trap other drivers from claiming as many championships. they changed the points and the first year out Jeff would have won under the old points system. the 24 became the first driver to ever give back his point lead and start over.. now this year he becomes the first driver to ever have the points lead and start in 2nd place in the chase. also chase drivers got 10 points per each win before the chase but not in it so even though both The 24 and 48 have 6 wins now Jeff only got 40 bonus pts and jimmy 60pts ...the chase is beyond a dumb idea. go tell Tiger woods after three days of golf and a 8 shot lead on the final day that he is back to even and will have to beat out 12 ppl to win the tourney every week..he would say hahaha and nascar has lost their history you cant compare era now...Jeff Gordon will get his respect someday after all the dale Sr lovers fade away.....and Jeff has all the records that count !

Wow, I think this is the first conspiracy theory I've ever heard that says NASCAR is AGAINST Jeff Gordon!
Basically, what I got from this is that you're thinking that NASCAR set up the Chase format to screw up Gordo's chances. Hate to break it to ya, but that would have happened to any driver who was first in the standings but didn't have the most amount of wins. And it's been like this for a few years now.

okay you are misguided...Gordon won what he won, he did not have anything taken from him, much more so the opposite, the chase was changed to get people out like Kenseth and to secure that Gordon would always be nascars chosen prodical

Lots of baseball teams with the most wins didn't win the world series, lots of football teams with the most wins didn't win the super bowl. The chase is a playoff situation. If Gordon was the best last year he would have won the chase. If he is the best this year he will win the chase.
It isn't rocket science is it???
