that is, I will either enter nothing or enter a number with the % after it. the percentage will be 2 or 3 digits with the percentage sign following. so i can enter either nothing, or , for ie, an entry of 110% [or 150%, 130% etc] excel handles the % sign, but i do not see access doing it. i use Access 2007 home/student version and i'm on windows vista. thanks!

I am entering directly into a datasheet, not a form, not yet anyways. can i only do what you're saying in a form view? that is, get to the afterupdate choice?

What is the data type of the field that you are entering it into? If it is a Text "Data Type", if should accept the % sign. If it is a Number "Data Type", it will display the % sign if you make the "Format" of that field in the table Percentage. However, if you type in 150 it will turn it into 15000%. If you type in 1.5 it will be 150%. To avoid this, (if you are entering the data in a form) first go to your table and make sure that the "Field Size" is set to Single. Then put this code on the After Update event of the field where you enter the percentage:
Me.YourFieldName = Me.YourFieldName/100
