i often find that i have lost count of how many rakat i have done while making salat (dhuhr, 'asr, and 'isha)... i don't know if i've done all four or only three, so i kinda make an "extra" one just in case. has anyone else had this problem? is this ok? i try to focus, but sometimes i find that i've lost count...

similairly, i lose count of how many times i've rinsed while making wudu, so i wash an "extra" time. is this ok?

ps: i would like to add, respectfully of course, that if you do not know what i'm talking about, then you do not need to answer, nor will you be able to help me.

Salam Sister. I have this problem too, though not with wudu. During prayer I sometimes forget how many rakat I have done, so I simply add another one or two to it, until I am sure I have done at least what is required. I would rather have too many rakat than not enough.

Sometimes I lose count as well. Just focus on your prayers and obliterate any other thoughts from your mind while you pray. It would help if you pray in your bedroom or somewhere where the computer and TV are not around. As for Wudu just remember 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3,1,1,3,3.
3 right hand up to the wrist
3 left hand up to the wrist
3 mouth
3 nose
3 right arm up to the elbow
3 left arm up to the elbow
3 your entire face
1 for your hair
1 for inside of your ears
3 for your right foot and between the toes
3 for your left foot and between the toes
Say Bismillah i rraham i erraheem before you do Wudu.

Peace be upon you all,

Dear Hana
It is simple and it occurs almost to everybody nowadays because we are mentally tired. However we all know that there is a solution for every problem, but no problems will be solved without making some efforts.

First of all, before you start your prayer ask and beg Allah to help you doing a perfect prayer. When you want to start your prayer say (ahuzu bi Allahi mna alshaytani rajem) I protect myself from Satan with the help of Allah. And find a spot point in your praying place and try just to focus on the place that you put your forehead when go to sajdah (that is very important for your prayer).

Secondly, whatever you read (recite) on your prayer mean it carefully and remember examples of them. For instance, when you say that sign in sure Fatiha (Allah: Guide us to the straight way) remember Abubakir Sadiq, Omer bin Alkhatab and Imam Ali. And when recite (The way of those whom you have blessed, not of those who have deserved anger, nor of those who stray) remember Satan, Faroh and Qarun. Please try to do this with every word in your prayer. And forget about everything belonging to this world (money, children, love, politics, school and so on).

Finally, after you have done your prayer do some Zikr, again ask and beg Allah to guide you to whatever is good and protect you from whatever is bad, and if you are in need of one dollar ask Allah 100 dollars because He is the most Rich One, if you want to get 75 in an important exam ask Allah for 95 because he is the most Clever One.

I wish that I have helped you sincerely...

According to Fiqh of Worship, you are supposed to go with what you are sure of. If you are sure that you have done three rakah, but unsure about the fourth one, then pray the fourth one. Then after you do the tashahud, but before the tasleem, you must do the sajdah of forgetfulness. Basically, you just say Allahu Akbar and do one two more prostrations. That is actually the scholarly answer to your question.

Salam

Easy Correction there is forgiveness for pure intentions.

ask your imam inshAllah to show you the correction prostrations after your Fard is done. Sunni is sunni and if you make a mistake there its also the same correction.

If your following an Imam then he will adjust accordingly... Subhan'Allah! Salam!

Tell yourself BEFORE prayer that you have to focus and not focus on the shaytan. Focus on Allah. Tell your self that you are praying for Allah. It usually helps me a lot. Sister, I hope I have helped you.

PS: I have the same problem too.

Before you begin your salat seek refuge in Allah from shaytaan and make dua'a to Allah for help with your focus and concentration on prayer. You have to actively focus on prayer.

This is normal, and happens to everyone. But it is the work of saytaan. He whispers in your ear and makes you think t=you forgot something. Just focus on your prayer more and you shouldnt have a problem.
