I have a hairless rat and she is awesome! I, too, find it difficult to take the time to play with her. I do, however, give her lots of things to keep herself entertained. Boxes...boy do they love boxes! They can nest in them and chew them up. It's a rats dream come true. Anytime I see a nice piece of "garbage" (cereal boxes, toilet and paper towel tubes) I stash them back for her. Also...another fun to do with them is get them a treat they love and wrap them up in a paper towel. They will have fun shredding the towels and then even more fun eating the treat. Also.....get a piece of yarn and string it with some fruit loops (or other circle type cereal). Hang it in their cage and let them go to town. Rats are pretty self entertaining.
Remember....they love "garbage"....so store up some clean boxes and tubes for them. They will love you for it and your pocket book will love you for it as well.

I generally wake up a little earlier and hold mine for about 30 minutes to 1 hr before my day starts and then when I get home and am on the computer I put them in a basket by the computer and rub them. We did a little adventuring today and I could tell whether it was Peaches or Gracie depending on where they were laying when we were in the store or I was driving. It was funny since I have only had my babies for 4 days. They are hairless and just as sweet as my last one. Gracies is my nibbler to see what I taste like and Peaches she just makes herself somfy where ever and goes right to sleep. Oh I buy stuff from the dollar tree for them right now but I am looking for a place to buy them clothes for winter. They love the baby hats which they use for pouches.

Here are their pics they are sooooo cute!!!!!!!

The suggestions the previous poster gave are excellent - give them kleenex boxes, paper towel rolls, even ladders and ropes that are made for birds are very entertaining for them. My younger rats also liked the hard plastic kitty "cage" balls with bells inside (don't get them soft ones - they'll chew them to pieces!)

If you've rattie-proofed a room in your house, you can also let them out to explore.

But I still suggest to at least and try and find 15-20 minutes every day to interact with them, even if its just sitting on the couch and playing or petting them. I used to let mine cuddle with me while I was on the computer. They're very intelligent animals and, while playtoys are nice, there's really no substitute for interaction.

what i did before my gerbil died was to give them big cardboard tubes to chew on. they enjoy this and it helps to cover the floor of their cage. Also get them some tubes to climb around in. i am pretty sure that they make them rat sized...

If you don't have time for your pets why not find them a home that does?
