The meaning of 666 lies in its being “a man’s number,” or as The Amplified Bible puts it, “a human number.” This expression could not refer to an individual human, for Satan—not any man—has authority over the beast. (Luke 4:5, 6; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 13:2, 18) Rather, the beast’s having “a human number,” or mark, suggests that it is a human entity, not spirit or demon, and that it therefore manifests certain human traits. What might they be? The Bible answers, saying: “All [humans] have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) The beast’s having “a human number,” therefore, indicates that governments reflect the fallen human condition, the mark of sin and imperfection.

Numerology was prevalent in the Old Testament. There are a number of explanations as to why 666 in the Book of Revelation is referred to as the "mark of the beast". One is that it was a code to indicate the Emperor Nero, arrived at by adding up the numbers assigned to other gods (1+...+36).
Another suggests that since according to Genesis mankind was created on the 6th day, that multiple numbers of 6 emphasis man without God.

Uh... not quite.

666 is 'the number of the beast' (Rev. 13:18). This is calculated by the Jews by adding up the numeric value of the letters in the persons name. Nero's name, for example, came to 666.

The 'mark of the beast' that allows people to buy and sell (Rev. 13:16,17) is ' the mark, the name, or the number of his name'- in other words, it would appear that '666' is not the only sign that you have dedicated yourself to following the beast.

One branch of eschatology teaches that Nero might indeed have been the Beast. That was his nickname in life, and 666 is his number the way the Jews would have figured it.

I've heard another theory that the anti-christ could just very well be the internet - because the mark of "666" in Roman Numerals looks exactly like "www" and one day, we all may need to use the internet exclusively for buying and selling.

Whatever the mark is - I doubt it will be so obvious and transparent as depicted in the evangelical "Left Behind" books - how would anyone be fooled as the scriptures teach will clearly happen?!?

It will not be a mark saying "666". This is not what is written. Study some more.

Correct, and well done on the clarification.

However, at the point the mark is ordered to be taken (without which no one can buy or sell), I don't believe people will understand that the antichrist will, at a later point in time, actually be indwelt by satan.

This number could also be a prefix to many numbers associated to yourselves i.e. social security , driving licence , passport . That's where most have consented without realisation . satans aim is to blind the people to God and it's worked to a great extent . What he forgets is that all are not blind and we kick *** .

Very good clarification, look for it in 2008, chips are already going in animals and some humans already have them, when that one arises, it will be like down loading your favorite tunes.

Yes. And you won't be able to buy or sell anything without the mark.
