My Dad served in the Navy in the late 60's, and was what was called a frogman. He was also stationed at Andros Island until the early 70's. I am searching for any of his buddies who could tell me a little about him. He is not doing well and can no longer communicate. His name is Robert Olsen, also goes by Bob or Robin. How can I find out about his military life? Can any veterans help me out? I would like to honor my father by writing about his remarkable life. Any suggestions?

Well, I can tell you what happened to that sub. In 1976 she was transferred to Peru for use by their navy. I suggest the sources listed below to try and make contact with any of his shipmates. The second one listed in quite good. I made contact with some shipmates from forty years ago. Since Tench was converted to a submarine used for recon and special groups, use the following in the second source to register:
USS Tench (AGSS-417)

I would go on the USS Forrestal web site. You could find out there. The accident that happend on the Forrestal is used for training throughout the Navy. Any 1 who's in the Nav knows about the Forrestal. Im sure if there is a will there is a way for your Dad to see her off.

Look thru your dad's stuff. Find his DD214. That will tell you when he served, what he was doing in his last duty, where he got out, medals, schools etc.

Do a google on the name, USS TENCH. and you will find out about the sub itself. Cross reference the dates on your dad's DD214 and it will give you an idea of what missions he may have been involved in. Below is a wikipedia reference.

Next reference is the official US NAVY site on this sub. The third reference is one with six names of people who served on the sub. One of them may be able to help you.

Last reference is the US Navy Sub Museum. They may be able to help you if you contact them.

You may also try to google your dads name with his rank (Seaman First Class Olson or etc) and see what comes up. His name may be on some list somewhere and if you search for it, you may find it.

Good luck.

Go to these 2 web sites and register your dad's name. I registered and have heard from several old shipmates

www.togetherweserved.com
www.hullnumber.com

Here are a few sites about the USS TENCH SS-417:

http://www.pbase.com/ralphyson2/uss_tench_ss417

http://www.navybuddies.com/ss/ss417.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Tench_(SS-417)

I'm sure you can find more doing a google.com search, but these are a good start.
Good luck! And may God bless your dad in a mighty way for serving in the SILENT SERVICE.

The submarine hull # was 417. It was sold to Peru in 1976 for scrap. Look on your fathers DD214 which he got when he got out of the service. It should tell you what awards, and other pertain info while he was on active duty.

You might contact Navy Bureau of Personnel... now Navy Personnel Command,

http://www.npc.navy.mil/channels

Not sure how much help they'll be because you're not a vet... but as next of kin... maybe. Since he's no longer in the Navy and is of my vintage, you might have go try archives... but BUPERS will tell you how to get in touch with them.

You can also go to your local VFW and see if they can be of any help.

There's another site that might be of assistance...
http://www.military.com... has some support capability

Don't know, but you might find one of his buddies on
www.NavySeals.com
