I have a 2007 stumpjumper comp hardtail. I want to lose some weight, and someone told me the wheels should come before the frame. So what are the cheapest and lightest wheelset. DT custom for Specialized X430, is what I have.
Thank You!!!!!

The wheels are usually the best place to save weight, but it's expensive! If you have any steel on the bike, look there first and maybe change those parts (cassette, chainrings, seatpost, pedals, etc).

As for wheels, price won't always equal the best deal for weight, and sometimes you sacrifice durability for race wheels. I'm really happy with the Mavic Crosstrails ($470) I bought last year.....saved a couple hundred dollars compared with the Crossmax and only lost a couple ounces in weight between the two. Formula has some good ones and so do Rolf/Bontrager. I just saw that www.sierratradingpost.com has a super deal on some Cane Creek disc/v-brake wheels for $140....take a serious look at those!

The weight differences are pretty small once you get into the $250 to $500 range. Weigh your wheels, and if you aren't saving more than 8oz or so, it may not be worth the money to you for new wheels.

While you're at it, you might consider going tubeless or at least running flyweight tubes if you don't have lots of sharp rocks and thorns in your area.

Have fun! :o)

Maybe check for tires, that would be the cheapest/most significant weight loss you can try. Most tires come aroud 700 to 900 grms each, but some tires might come at 500. So, if you change a pair, you can save like 200-300 grams for not much money, well, not as much as changing wheels.

Another thing you might look for is replacing the rim, which might not be that expensive, but probably the labor cost will be some.
