I'm not sure what all you are trying to explain, but you can upgrade to XP from ME and not loose all of your info.
I would be more concerned that your computer meets the minimum system requirments.
Each newer Operating System requires more Ram and more free space Your older computer may not have enough Ram and may not have a large enough hard drive to even upgrade to another Operating System.

You can use the Upgrade Version of WindowsXP,(Home or Pro). You have to make sure your system has the requirements to run it. For instance,(if memory serves), WinXP Home: 500MHz processor, minimum, and 256MB's of Ram memory,(Min.) Check Microsoft.com/Knowledge Base for more info, and Walmart for the upgrade software,(ummm, $99.00?+tax?)

No, you should upgrade to XP by reformatting. It is the best choice as some of your curent drivers may not be compatible with XP. Installation will be faster too.
