I don't mean music and talk show radio, I mean radio as is the communcations device used by police, firemen, security companies, and major corporations. There are so many terms and different kinds of frequencies, it's hard to understand. I want to understand how radio works, and how to interpret information on sites like radioreference.com. I am attempting to program a Radio Shack Pro-97 Scanner, and understand for the most part what the manual tells me but I have learned that there is much more to it. Any info or good websites to go to, or books to read would be greatly appreciated.

Here try some of these sites and read up on it.......... Believe me, this is not an easy science to understand. You should think about getting a degree in Electronics and Computer Science if you are interested in this field:

this is for amateur radio, but they can teach you anything you want to know about how radio works. there are special clubs that listen to scanner radio for cops and firemen and pilots.
