I have the utmost respect for the police and the law, and I always have. At one time I had a police officer as a roommate for a few months. I am just curious, since the police are treated so badly and underpaid, why would someone want to be one? Ways they are treated badly include:

--They are underpaid for doing such a risky job, as their lives are in potential danger every day they work.
--A lot of people have no respect for them.
--They can easily go to prison for killing someone in self-defense and having lack of evidence to prove it, and being considered racist.

Aside from the authority, is there any other good reason? Doing good for society is a positive aspect as well, but all these negative reasons seem to outway the positive. I wouldn't mind being a police officer myself, but as badly as they are treated, I never will. Another benefit includes being able to have an all-state concealed weapons permit (CWP) while offduty and after retirement.

I prefer to think of myself as a social proctologist (one who treats societal hemorrhoids). Seriously, it is a rush to be able to help someone that really needs it. Also most of us are adrenalin junkies and depending on where you work you can get a little or a lot of adrenalin rushes. There are a lot of negatives but I have found that the positives out weigh the negatives, just my personal view.

Once every now and again you actually get to help someone. Most of the time you're simply a human garbage collector. There is a certain sense of satisfaction knowing that you're helping to keep your community a decent place for all the people you never meet. If you're in it for the money, you have definately made a poor choice.

well, the reason why i wanted to be a cop is, first, its a nice job, rewarding, and you meet different people everyday, also you never get bored at all. Also, i think the pay is great in California, and great benefits. Also, be a role model for younger kids. Disadvantages, its risky, but every officer knows the risk when they take the job, yes people have no respect for cops, and to those who disrespect the good cops, i have no respect for them either. But im proud of my job, and will always be.

I'm in the process of becoming one myself. I have five years of experience in law enforcement with high-risk employers (one year I was doing plain-clothes at an amusement park) so I think I can safely say that I've dealt with a good majority of common situations. That said, when someone says "thank you" for finding her autistic son, or for rushing someone's loved one to medical attention, or helping a person turn his/her life around...dude, it's right up there with sex.

Also, there are some funnier, lighter moments in my experience that I will never trade away for, like, having falling down a hill of mud. lol

You are sooo right. I thought the same thing when i wanted to be one. The reason for being one is selfless. Its to make society better, which is what we need. People think tht they can do WHATEVER they want, which is where police come in. People hate authority figures. If you want to do good for ur country, become a police officer..sometimes the good you feel inside outweigh the risks.

has nothing to do with authority. it has everything to do with enjoying the job, and feeling like you did something to help society at the end of the day. people can say all the rude things they want. all I hear is blah..blah...blah..blah. there are 3 people in this world whom I care what they think. 1 is me the other 2 are myself and I.

The plus sides are:
The satisfaction that comes from helping people.
Knowing that you have made a difference in their lives.
Just as important is the satisfaction of knowing that you help to get some really bad people, guns and drugs off the street in the process.
Plus, it can be very exciting and very intense.
And not all states allow the CCW after retirement. So that is kind of a mixed bag.
