I was started on two new medications yesterday and I feel a bit out of it. I am extremely sensitive to anything that affects my serotonin levels. Everything just sort of shuts down (speech, vision, etc.) I'm not at that stage obviously, but I just don't feel "right". Would either of these prescriptions cause any change to my serotonin levels? Doxycycline and metronidazole. The pharmacist at Student Health is gone for the weekend.

Those drugs do not affect serotonin levels directly. They are working to get rid of the infection, and sometimes, a side effect of those drugs are nausea.

They are both antibiotics, so they should not affect serotonin levels. If you have a sinus infection or are being treated for another illness, it is likely the illness causing the problem.

You may be allergic to one of them.

Often side effects are worse for those who have problems with medication in the first place. I have a lot of medicine sensitivitles, especially to antibiotics. They make me sluggish and tired. I only take them when absolutely necessary. If you are taking them for acne, just stop. You'll be thankful later, when you don't have drug-resistant bacterial infections or develop allergies to them, like I did. There are plenty of other ways to treat acne without damaging your immune system.

Drug information below, including side effects and "tell your doctor before you use this medication if you have any of these conditions"... and serotonin problems aren't listed. (I have sensitive serotonin levels, as well. Most antibiotics just make me tired and weak.)

If you look on webmd.com, Doxycycline can but rarely causes vision problems and mental/mood changes. Metronidazole can effect mental and mood changes as well but it is unlikely. If you are already sensitive to andthing that affects your serotonin levels, keep an eye on everything that you are feeling and talk to your Dr. about it.

At least one of these is an antibiotic. If you have an infection or some sort of illness that you're taking antibiotics for that can effect, your whole body. Probably including serotonin levels, but even if they're not effected your body's probably all out of whack from being sick. Get lots of rest.

Doxycycline---You'll want to eat when you take that crap. If you're feeling a little bit..faint, like you're fading, and yet you can't bring yourself to eat anything, you're where I was when I took that crap. Here's the tricky part about doxycycline though--The last thing you want to do in the world is eat, but eating is the only way out. It'll make you feel better if you do, trust me .. It's just hard to go through with it, you get this sort of nausea just thinking about cramming anything into your mouth..

I'm pretty sure those are antibiotics. They shouldn't mess with seratonin levels. Just in case, go to www.nami.org and look for information on the subject. They should have an available link or an article that could help.

there is not a reason why you should be feeling like that with those. Unless of course you are taking something else that you didn't tell your doctor about. Make sure you eat before you take them as well.

Unless you are on other meds, they should not have such a significant effect. Stay away from alcohol too...
