Why are so many people using pain meds to get high these days? And why are they so damn proud of it. I can't believe the way people answer on here about them. Most don't have a clue what they are talking about, but they sure think that they do and that scares me to death.
Addiction is so bad now that REAL patients with pain complain that when they go to the doctor the doc is afraid to prescribe it because they are being watched. It's nuts.
There was actually a girl on this site earlier that though it was okay that she has been on methadone for 6yrs to get off of Tramadol/Ultram. Whats it coming too? How could so many people need to numb their reality so much that they will resort to narcotics that cause a wealth of health problems in their futures.

I am a drug addict and I'm not proud of it. I did drugs to get rid of reality because i want to numb from life's up and downs like divorce, domestic violence, losing son. I was so upset that i want to get high to feel better and not have any worries about life. I overdose twice and almost died. I was taking pain meds for my cancer i got then when it was gone and started to have problems i started to abuse and come up with excuse to get it so i can keep the high and not worry about life. I though it would make me feel better but all it did was make it worst.

Methadone, as far as I know and have been able to find out, is used as a chronic pain reliever or to relieve withdrawals from opiods such as heroin. I have never heard of it being used to wean anyone off Ultram or Tramadol. And for six years? Isn't that just trading one addiction for another?
Also, Methadone (Dolophine) is a dangerous drug which can cause respiratory arrest or life threatening cardiac arrythmias if not taken exactly as prescribed. It used to be administered only in clinical settings for heroin addiction withdrawals and for only brief periods of time.

Prescripion drugs are more easily accessed than some street drugs which may account for a lot of the increased usage these days, especially among young people.
I find it hard to bellieve that folks are so casual about these drugs. It is neither safe nor legal to use them to 'get high.'
As to why they do it; I'll bet you could get a million answers to that one.

They get 'hooked' psychologically and then 'trapped' - literally - physiologically. Then they'll do anything to get the drug; and wind up in prison or worse, they wind up dead; overdosed or from withdrawals. And this is from the abuse of prescription drugs, not street drugs; altho those do the same.

But when used correctly, under a doctor's guidance; these same RX drugs can relieve chronic pain and restore some kind of normalcy to lives tormented by disease or disorder.

It's sad that people look for a quick release from their problems only NOT to realize that this can hurt them too. I mean, I barely take meds at all, not even highly addictive pain meds after surgery and dental work. I am scared that I will be addicted and I don't want that. I don't even drink for the same reasons, too many people in my family that were alcoholics that practically killed them in the end.... Too many doctors also out there that over prescribe without knowledge that the person is addicted and they just keep feeding them their addiction, hence with Anna Nicole...

I don't have much for an answer, but I agree with you 100%. My wife's relitives - the majority of them are pill heads, have kids, and drive (with them in the car) higher than a kite while high on pills - scares the hell outta me too. Its really a big problem I wish someone would stand up and try to do something about the doctors that keep perscribing, when it's not needed - even after the abuse has been reported.

I know people who are addicted to pain meds, and I don't know anyone who is proud of it. And it is not always their fault, sometimes it is the doctors fault. I know a guy who started taking Vicodens because he has bad teeth. He doesn't have dental insurance, so he can't afford to get everything taken care of all at once. So the dentist takes care of one thing at a time, then just throws vicodens at him to keep him comfortable until he can afford to get the next thing done. They give out pain meds like candy. Well now this man is addicted to vicodens, through no fault of his own. They are an addicting drug, and the doctors know this. He has tried MANY times to quit, because he knows they are bad for his health, but it isn't a habit, and it isn't to get high, it is a physical addiction. And the doctors continue to hand them out to everyone.

I also know of people who do take pain meds to get high. And these people that I know are not proud of this either. The people I know who take these drugs to get high have messed up lives. Like their father went to prison for murder when they were 10, their mom had 5 kids with 4 different dads, etc. So I know they are dealing with a lot. But I still think the best thing would be to leave town and get a good job. But that isn't always easy either. Rather than battering them for it, we need to try the best we can to help them get out of this, if you personally know anyone who is involved with drugs.

*When you batter and insult people who take drugs, you are making them feel down, they get depressed, and turn to drugs to make it all better. They don't need insults, they need genuine help. They need a support system who will help them break the addiction, and get professional help. I have known quite a few addicts, and this is the only thing that has helped any of them break their addiction.

People have wanted to escape since the beginning of time. (Opium, alcohol.)
It's really gotten out of hand now. Too many doctors are handing out drugs like candy. And too many people are selling them on the street. It's a big mess!
I think people have to mature before they realize that being naturally high is the way to go. Kids today are a mess.
Interesting question deserves a star! :)

i do feel the same way about that I'm actually needing to take pain meds for the surgery i had a year ago but i still have a lot of pain so I'm still on them but I'm on tramadol like that girl was but Ive been on it so long that its not working much anymore on my pain and because of the docs not wanting to give out pain meds for certain things i cant get anything stronger so i really cant stand the fact that there are people out there screwing it up for the rest of us nice question

That's why the kids should stick to marijuana. The plant itself doesn't harm the body (it's the smoke) and it's much less harmful to your body than alcohol and especially these chemicals.
Bake some marijuana treats or invest in a vaporizer, and you have a virtually harmless high.
Of course some older and misinformed folk may disagree, but that's only because they assume marijuana is the devil based on what the government spoon feeds them, without doing any actual research themselves.
The government could say knitting is bad for you for 80 years, would that make it true?

One of the reasons I can think of is that fact that some people need to feel challenged.

When they are able to "get by" when they are on drugs, they feel like they have beat the system. Since everyone says drugs are bad and will make you a failure if you use them, the addictive mind will take it as a challenge to get away with it.

How many people brag about not going to class, but still getting a passing grade? How many people brag about speeding, but not getting a ticket.

Addiction is a scary thing, and most people are happy to be addicted to something that is not illegal.

Because they're easy to get. People probably view prescription meds as "less illegal" than the street drugs. Numbing reality sure can be a lot easier than dealing with it.
