I was able to show my fiance 5 rings I really loved in our price range. I told him what I loved about each one, and why, and then he went back later and bought the ring. Lucky thing for me, I had worked at that particular jewelry store, so my old manager gave my fiance the manager's discount. (Jewelry markup, esp. on diamonds is VERY high!!! He chose a ring that was over 3k with taxes etc, and got it for a few hundred)
Maybe you can go online and find some rings you would really like, and print out the pages (the website would then be on the bottom of the page) and hand him the printouts. You can definitely find bargains online. Just make sure he knows your ring size!
Another silly thing my dad did for my mom was get her the ring setting she loved and promised when they had a little more to spend get the gem to place in it (hers happened to be a ruby instead of a diamond). This is beneficial because some places have awesome ring settings but the 4c's are not a good quality (cut, clarity, color and carat). You can go to a wholesale diamond place and pick out the diamond yourself for much cheaper than you would expect.

Tell him the cut of the stone and the type of setting you want and tell him you would be more than happy with 0.5 carats. Sometimes the ring is also for a mans ego.
You may want to shop a suggest places he buys the ring if you know less expensive places. Bluenile.com may be less expensive than the shops he has been looking at, but you can use it to see how much diamonds at different sizes cost.

Figure out what you want before you get there. My ring only has a 1/6th carat center stone, my fingers are small, so it looks larger on me that it may on someone with larger hands.
Point out what you like, but if you see it's too much, make comments that the stone is simply too big for your fingers. It's natural for men to want to get the biggest one they can afford. But if you are very "Sure" about how the size plays on your fingers, you will be able to spend a conservative amount of money. You can always get a nicer anniversary band.
Also, find out before you go to the jeweler if there is any sets on sale or are being discontinued. We saved a lot of money that way.

In general, guys just want to know 1) the shape diamond you like (round, pear, square, etc) especially if there's a shape you definitely do NOT want, 2) whether you want silver or gold, 3) your ring size, and 4) the general style you like. Some women like baquettes on the side, others hate that look. Some like just a solitaire and others don't. He's just looking for what you generally like. If I were you, I would point out a few choices that don't look toooo expensive. It's great that he's asking! Some guys just buy a ring they think their girlfriend will like and then are surprised when their gf has to fake enthusiasm over it.

Try a simulant.
I wanted a larger engagement ring and ended up getting a 1 ct moissanite ring that I love. It's from Bella Jewelry Company - www.bellajewelryco.com. No one can tell that it isn't a diamond and it was only $439.
If you want to read reviews of Bella, go to http://www.betterthandiamond.com/discussion/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm
If you don't like the idea of a simulant, you can always upgrade later when your fiancee has more money. But, IMO, why would you pay $$$ when you can get the same look for less? You'll get the ring you want, and your fiancee will get something within his budget.

I'd say go to a jewelry store, a chain or mall store will usually have a more affordable set of rings to choose from you will give up some of the qualit on the stones but as long as you like it and it sparkles who cares, and then try on the rings to see what you like. If the ring you like is too pricey ask if they offer it in a smaller more affordable size, or try to locate it in another store for less. Try online, I don't know what your budget is but I have seen terrific deals on www.whiteflash.com and www.worldjewels.com

What I would do is tell him that you will shop aroud and tell him what stores. Then take a friend with you that can later go with your boyfriend. Also if you go alone the store clerk can be very helpful . You can try on ring at your leisure and she will write them down on a business card and when he goes back to that store he can deal with the same clerk and she can also direct him on the one's you tried on and which you seemed to like the best and he can pick from the one's you already picked out.
Hope this helps and congrats

Go to EBay. They have beautiful used rings at great bargain prices. My son got one with a quarter carat diamond for $125.00. It's a job - you have to find one you like and keep bidding. And if you lose it at the last minute, you start all over again with another ring. You have to look at the seller's feedback to make sure that it is good, and you might have to have it sized, but it was well-worth the work.
Good luck.

he doesn't want to be viewed as a cheapskate, but don't pick something 2 expensive or 2 cheap. you'll hurt his wallet or you'll hurt his pride. see which 1 u like the most and is in the right price range, say that this is the ring for me and stick with it no matter what he says. you will definitely persuade him!!!

I'm with Princess. You're wearing it forever, so make sure you love it!! A half carat most likely won't break him, so don't sweat that and pick a few that are roughly that size, so he knows you're NOT just doing it to make it affordable.
Good luck to you!
