He says they are from the Algonquian nation, and I continously find things that say that Algonquian is a language they spoke, nothing about a 'nation' per say. I would like to physically talk to someone from this tribe as well, thanks , i have googled this, and got tons of history on how it came to be, but i need to know how to find out if he is generally a 'native american'. thanks

You are 100% correct Algonquian is a language group.

The Mi'kmaq Nation was a member of the Wabanaki Confederacy that controlled northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes. The Micmacs are original natives of the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick region. They also settled in locations in Quebec, Newfoundland, and Maine. Today, most Mi'kmaq people live on the Canadian side of the border, but the Aroostook Micmacs live in northeastern Maine.

Like trying to prove any ancestry YOU are responsible for doing the genealogy. You need to start with yourself and work backwards to the person you believe has the Native American ancestry. After you think you have the right person you will need to contact one of the 38 groups of Micmac that are registered in Canada or the 1 in Maine to see if that person appears on one of the rolls. Once you have the proof that your ancestor was indeed on the rolls you can complete the membership application and proceed with that process.

Here is the address and such on the Aroostook Micmacs

Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians
P.O. Box 772
521-D Mani St.
Presque Isle, ME 04769
207-764-1972
FAX 764-7667

Good luck

There are many Native American researchers on any one of these rootsweb boards who will be more than willing to help you track down the Indian community you are looking for. It might take a while but it's well worth it!
