I am a believer in Jesus Christ, and an active member of my local church.. I am suspicious that the kind of Christmas celebration the school is preparing involves Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, etc... in summary, NOTHING TO DO with the real spirit of Christmas celebration, which is our Lord Jesus Christ and the the message of the Gospel... The problem is that this celebration to be held DURING SCHOOL HOURS opens the door to other religious celebration in the school (Muslim, Hindu, Jew, etc.) DURING SCHOOL HOURS.... I would rather prefer NOT TO CELEBRATE RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS AT SCHOOL BECAUSE IMAGINE HOW MUCH TIME WE SHOULD HAVE TO INVEST JUST FOR RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS (IN A SECULAR SCHOOL) IF ANY RELIGIOUS GROUP WOULD LIKE TO CELEBRATE THEIR OWN HOLIDAYS DURING SCHOOL HOURS... NO TIME FOR MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, ETC.

So-crates: well, even if I am a Christian, I go for no allowing any religion to celebrate during school hours... I think that is fair.

Religious holidays have no part in taxpayer paid-for schools.
A general holiday party might be nice if the name of the religion or holiday is left out of it. It's confusing enough for kids to know what to believe without hearing the fairy tales of various religions. It would be nice to celebrate peace and love that are universal and let kids decide when they are older whether or not they want to believe what each religion teaches.

Our elementary school calls it a "Winter Holiday."
I see nothing wrong with taking 30 minutes out of the last day before the holidays to have a party.
I've taught for 26 years and can tell you that the children's minds are NOT on schoolwork that last day.
There is nothing religious about it if this is a public school.
Chill. Relax.
Good grief! Parties are fun! We have 2 parties: Winter Holiday and the last day of school.
Give the kids a break! They deserve a little time at the end of the last day before a holidays to have some party food and fun.
If it bugs you, keep them home and give them some schoolwork to do. I feel bad for the poor children to miss a harmless party. I guess you could come get them early if you think a party will be detrimental to their well-being.
Do you have a tree at home? Surely your child has seen a Christmas tree before. They already have them out at the malls.
I doubt your child's mind will be warped by seeing a tree at school.

Lighten up women. It's only the winter solstice they are celebrating.
Cant have that - its pagan.
Um its a public school - no religions allowed - but the winter solstice is part of the CALENDAR!!!!! Dont they teach the kids about the calendar?
There are seven days,
there are seven days,
there are seven days in a week.
sunday monday,
tuesday wednesday,
thursday friday saturday.
Jesus was born (supposedly) on the winter solstice, so was Horus, and Mithras, maybe Zoroaster and a few other pagan gods too. (cant remember everyone's names).

So, now do you understand the point we atheist are trying to make??? I think its great that you practice Christianity - whatever floats your boat. But, you are 110% correct about where the problem lies in allowing one religion to have their symbols and holidays all over the country, while others arent allowed the same privelege.... and thats all we are trying to say.
Of course, I fear that your reasoning for not wanting that holiday celebrated differs from mine reasoning... I believe it is right because everyone deserves to worship as they see fit. I assume you believe it is right because only Chrisitanity should be celebrated...that is an assumption, so if I am wrong, I apologize in advance.

If you've sent them to a private religious school, then you can ask to allow the child to opt out.
If they're in a public/secular school, you can do the same. I also agree that education and religion should be kept separate, and schools should not enforce a religion or force religious ceremonies or prayers during school hours.

Every parent has the right to keep a child home if they choose. If you don't like the idea of your child having a fun time with his/her friends and/or learning about other cultures, by all means, keep the little beggar home. No one is FORCING you to send the kid to school. Perhaps you should home school your child so he/she is not forced to interact with those who are DIFFERENT and can only be taught your horrendously narrow version of the world. I feel sorry for your child/ren.

It should be a "winter celebration." That is what most schools are moving towards because of this issue. No religion should be promoted in any school at any time.

So don't send her the day of the party.
In my family we do not celebrate Christmas, Halloween etc (we are also Christians) and in the past I kept my my kids home. Took them to McDonalds or whatever for lunch and gave them some schoolwork to do ( I had asked their teachers prior for some extra).
They understand why they are not participating in the party and are totally fine with it.

Your child is going to be exposed to much worse things in this life than a school holiday program.. I have lived in the US and Canada..I have always loved the programs..It's about the kids. They are happy and they are singing..In the US it was more secular than in Canada..but they are all cute as can be. It's your job as a parent to instill values in your child. You would be surprised how well they can sift out the chaff from the wheat all by themselves.
