The answer depends on which scholar you ask. Some believe it to be a sin but others believe it is highly disliked and should be avoided. So far the only excuse that I have come across that could be considered acceptable is if they feared they would commit adultery and even then they recommend other methods of curbing the desire such as fasting or a cold shower.

It is a sin, but i think its a sin that can sometimes be unavoidable.
I sincerely doubt that any boy, or any girl, has not done so whilst going through puberty.
Its good to try not to do so, but if its unavoidable, then what can you do?
I believe this is also the reason for why there are so many sexually frustrated people spread througout the world.
To relieve this "Sexual urge" It might be common practice to get kids married in the early stages of puberty so that they do not engage in this sinful practice, but fulfil it through its rightful process.
I don't know about anyone else, but this isn't the right way to go.
If masturbation can prevent things like this, so be it.

Even in the Muslim and other religions are always having gut wrenching orgasm to the point of foaming at the mouth and even to the point of hemorrhaging internally until he had to be sent to the Hospital. It is a very sad thing indeed and our young people walking around with not a care in the world and wasting their lives in such a way.

Masturbation is haraam in Islam because it is self sex and lust. It is a sin as well because for men you are wasting your seed which is only meant for procreation but it is also haraam for women. ALLAH(SWT) says if you feel that you will be tempted to do something haraam like masturbate then you should fast or get married as soon as possible so you don't become like the Kaafur and are tempted by the Shayatin to commit sin.

all religions that i know of - teach that one should not masterbate. i think that this is because there is something in the act - that people realize is 'self-centered' and not 'whole'

Even if every single muslim man were to deny having done this, then every single one of them would be lying. Masturmating is pretty much a rite of passage for a young male who discovers his body.

They "can" unless they've had their two hands chopped off for--oh, what would be serious enough--chewing gum in the street? Whether they are allowed or not is a moot point.
