In the last 16 years, 2 that I can think of (without having to do an online search) have died while actually in a race. Dale Earnhardt, and J.D. McDuffie.

Others have died as a result of injuries sustained in racing accidents, and others as a result of injuries sustained in crashes during practice.

Too many.

A lot of the names I found died during practice and qualifying rather than the actual race.

Here's a list of NASCAR drivers who died during a race (From Cup and Truck series):

- Friday Hassler, Daytona, February 1972
- Larry Smith, Talladega, May 1973
- Tiny Lund, Talladega, August 1975
- Terry Schoonover, Atlanta, November 1984
- Grant Adcox, Atlanta, November 1989
- J. D. McDuffie, Watkins Glen, August 1991
- Dale Earnhardt, Daytona, February 2001, Daytona 500
- John Nemechek (1970-1997), NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, Homestead
- Tony Roper (1964-2000), NASCAR CTS race, Fort Worth
